My 9 year old already listens to vintage music and radio shows, We play 78's around the house constantly. He's helped me work on Jukes, Victrolas and Phonos since he was 4. In fact he has his own mini collection started already : 2 califone school record players, Wollensak T-1500 reel to reel, 1954 Muntz console that he watches when running his Lionel trains. He's sorted out several 78's and put them in binders and started asking for more of my reel to reel tapes. Yes, He's already a vintage nut like his Dad!

Can't help with the convergence-BUT-my eyes were drawn to that short stack of 78rpm records you have on top of the set, at the right. What's on them, & do you play them on the RCA Victor consolette phono to the right of your gorgeous Zenith? Maybe you can get the boys interested in vintage music, too. Gotta carry that torch going down to each new generation :)

Ah Macrovision, I should have known. I'm using a Sima macrovision scrubber for the video, Guess the signal is getting thru slightly. Any thoughts on a decent affordable cross hatch generator? Heathkit?

The labels for knob location are inside the door, you are adjusting the tint when you speak of the fleshtone knob. Those dots are Macrovision from your DVD player, it is covered in several other threads. It needs the chroma circuits aligned, I bet it drifted again. Grab that cloverleaf and a cross hatch generator and we'll walk you through it.

Someone oughta take one of those, make a mold from it and do some repro castings in alumilite.:thmbsp:

reeferman 10-16-2009 11:35 PM

is that stuff flexible?

oldtvman 10-17-2009 05:16 PM

IF you can't get it resolved I'll be glad to drive up and take it off your hands, as I still need a flyback for my Zenith.

your chroma circuits are way off. That picture of the range of the tint proves it. Never should you have blue flesh tones on one end of the control. I've seen this alot on zeniths. Tint range should go from a green to purple to know if its working right. If it goes from blue to purple then something is wrong. The burst amp plate coil needs to be adjusted for proper tones. You can do it by the book which requires a scope, or you can set the tint control mid range and adjust the burst amp plate coil for proper flesh tone. After you adjust that, check the tint to see if it goes purple to green. On Zeniths with the sheet beam demodulators, adjusting the tint control seems to make very subtle changes to the color, not like an RCA where you can see a dramatic difference from saturated purple to a saturated green when turning the control back and fourth. That being said, tend to like RCA's chroma circuits better.

How do yellow objects look? Do they seem greenish or brown? If so the injection coil is out of alignment or even at fault. Those coils are hard to adjust though as the slugs are normally siezed or the coil tube is brittle and easily breaks when one attempts to adjust it.

As for the broken cloverleaf: I think by '64 zenith started using the good TRW convergence clovers. Both of the sets I have have broken clovers. I drilled two holes one on each end of the break and used a spring with moderate tension to pull the clover together. The magnets were not separated by 120 degrees, I could line up any two of the three magnets over the guns and the other one would be in error by a degree or two. I simply rotated the clover to split the difference. It worked quite well and was still able to set convergence and maintain a good picture.

Thanks for the tips Doug!
I'll try a few slight adjustments tomorrow and report back. And yes, Yellows do seem greenish.

OK, The old broken cloverleaf has been replaced with a NOS cloverleaf.
Here are some current screenshots and a new youtube video http://www.youtube.com/user/wurly110.../0/z-O6As0UfPI

I'm sure the set needs more adjustments but video looks very good to my un-trained eye. What do you think?

Lookin really good! I can still see a little bit of reds and blues on the crosshatch... just a little bit. Looks like the blue magnet needs to be moved just a tad.... same for the red. Of course, then you'll have to go touch up all the knobs on the board again once you move those.

Overall, that set makes a really nice picture!

The cabinet is interesting. Is that all one piece, or is it a table set on top of a factory stand?

reeferman 10-25-2009 12:38 PM

Jim,

Much better. Perform a static convergence at the center of the picture, (as that is where the bulk of the watching takes place) then work on the top, bottom, left and right. Adjust your contrast, focus, and brightness so the dots will be more pronounced and easier on the eyes while adjusting. The right side of the picture is normally the hardest to converge (they are controlled by the coils and not the pots).

It's a metal table set on a wood factory stand painted to match the TV cabinet. Seems like the convergence was better yesterday, Maybe it popped out a bit or drifted today when I took that screenshot. These sets always seem to be a work in progress.

The picture is "watchable" as-is and I'm sure it could look much better. I'm concerned these old pots could be crunchy and turning them too much may only cause more problems. I suppose I should find a Sams photofact for the set and go thru the setup step by step, I may only have one shot at it if the pots are in poor condition. I do notice the picture is slightly out of focus when the set is turned on, Focus improves after a minute or so.

focus is normal.mine does the same thing.takes about a minute before it gets sharp and crisp.your convergence looks pretty good.a little touch up and you are good to go!mine is not looking that good right now.too many projects and not enough time.
