Besides the 17BP4 is 70 degrees deflection, pretty sure the 23BP4 is 110 degrees. For starters you could use a 8YP4 test CRT.

[edit] just remembered, I think you'd need a socket adapter when using the 8YP4 universal 110 degree test CRT.

Silly question (I think)...but would the electrolytics still go bad in an unbuilt kit?

I had heard it was time as well as operation that dries up electrolytics. I've heard of so many TVs that were fine the last time they ran, and then were stored for so many years, and then had all the various vertical, horizontal problems that come with bad caps.

Not a silly question at all.

An electrolytic will degrade if left unused, but can be brought back by "re-forming" it - slowly increasing voltage across the cap until the specified working voltage is reached.

A decades-old electrolytic has a good chance of being dried out, whether it was used or not. Re-forming won't bring those back. If I were to find an old kit and build it, I doubt I'd use any electrolytics or paper caps in it.

47'Plymouth would be smart to test them all before building the kit. May save a lot of grief later.

47'Plymouth 06-02-2013 01:55 PM

Yes,I'll install new type caps and not use NOS ones...

I have 5AXP4,a Selson test tube setup; I 'm looking at a temporary
Fix until the correct CRT 23BP4...can be located and purchased
Preferably a NIB,NOS CRT,can ya'll see if you can find me one....with a 110*degree
Adapter ...that would be a temp fix until a 23BP4 is located!

Being it's a series heater string, be cautious that whatever CRT you use has the same heater current draw as the 23BP4.

I want to thank you for the assistance and to Winsco Jim for the schematic
