This is a fun video: SONY Edit Station ES-3 demo. Here are some specs.
Dual Intel Pentium III 500 MHz or faster Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a Main Memory: 256 MB or more Matrox Millennium G400 Dual Monitor 16MB AGP SCSI Controller: Adaptec AHA-3950U2 HDD: Min 2 x 7200Rpm Ultra 2 SCSI Hard Disk Drives for DV/DVCAM Compression HDD: Min 4 x 18GB 10,000Rpm Ultra 2 SCSI Hard Drives for Uncompressed Video with Optional ESBK3032 Software In 2003 Sony established Sony Creative Software, I suppose to provide better tailored software. In 2016 Sony sold off Vegas, because I guess Sony did not need it anymore, and Firewire has long been forgotten. |

One thing the Samsung does well is straight analog composite with all the fancy enhancements turned off. I can feed it say my Laserdisc (Philips CDV488) or Type-C (Sony BVH-2000) and it really looks about that of a DVD. Both of these sources have a high S/N ratio to begin with and feeding it an amorphic widescreen 480i it does quite well with the details. |
I came across interesting info from a reasonably reputable source, that for base DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO25 and even for Digital-S, frame size is 720x480 for 525/60 and 720x576 for 625/50. But DVCPRO50, allegedly, has 720x487.5 for 525/60 and 720x583.5 for 625/50. Not a big deal, but I think these are the same numbers as on Digital Betacam? Did Panasonic mean as seamless interop with DigiBeta as possible, or this is a mistake in the docs?

Post production resolutions in storage vs display given the pixel aspect ratio. Digital Betacam is 720x486 in a 10-bit YUV @ 4:2:2 running a 2.34:1 DCT compression to yield a 90Mbit/sec data rate plus 4 channels of 20-bit 48Khz/sample uncompressed audio and a 5th linear audio cue track according to the front page of my DVW-A500 service manual. Active lines vs total lines which include the vertical blanking bar are often interchanged.

I made a video about the history of DV. Missed some things, but I think it is watchable :) I will make an addendum with more tech details and rumors.
Here is a link to the video on Youtube: History of DV - the first consumer-grade digital video format. |
It was well done and to the point.

And, I take "fringe" and "weirdo" as badges of honor in my collecting habits. :D I am happy if I am not the only one. |
