Very nice set.

Here's the CTC-5.

Gory details:
This is a Super chassis, arguably the worst early 21 inch set RCA ever made. The design high voltage is only 18.5 kv, making it a real dim-bulb set. I used to have a 21FBP22 glass tube retrofitted in this set, which helped a bit with brightness. The current tube is a re-gunned 21AXP22, so it is the original tube with wide color gamut (especially the green), but it is even dimmer. Also, the particular 21FB that I had gave almost perfect convergence. This regunned 21AX seems to have the gun rotated slightly out of true. To get the corner convergence, you need to to rotate the convergence coil cloverleaf about 15 degrees. You would think this might ruin the purity, but it doesn't. However, I haven't looked at the beam landing with a microscope yet.

This set has been sitting for over a year without being tested since it was shipped from Illinois to Arizona. When I fired it up today, the only obvious problems was that the yoke had shifted and had to be pushed forward to get purity; plus, the red dynamic convergence is way off. [Oh, and the power cord got lost somewhere.] The corner convergence is affected somewhat by that apparent gun rotation. I will be doing some of that never-ending convergence chasing now, I see.

The color actually looks somewhat better in the photos than it does to the naked eye, except for the reflections from room lights. When I turned off the lights, you couldn't see the front of the cabinet. If I hadn't tried to to get this all done this afternoon, I could have fiddled with shooting the CRT with the lights off and superposing that on a good shot of the cabinet.

I will also post a pic with Christmas decorations on top over in that thread.

Edit: When I first fired it up today, the width was inadequate. I am running a variac into an isolation transformer with multiple taps. I found out that the direct side of the isolation transformer Where I have been plugging in the line meter does not have the same voltages as the isolated side. The middle tap is especially different; the high and low taps not so bad. So at that point I just cranked up the variac until I had full width. I will have to put together a two-prong power strip setup so I can plug the TV and the line meter into the same tap and see what I really have.

My 1956 (1955 model year) Hoffman Colorcaster:

This was a gift from my Grandpa Burkhardt, the grumpiest old kraut to ever walk the face of the planet. He's a pain in the ass, but we love him and keep him around anyway :D

I saw the set on eBay, and unbeknownst to me, he tracked down the seller and offered to buy the set before the auction ended. I then paid to have it shipped from the SF Bay area back to Michigan. I then sold the set to another local collector to go on an ill-fated adventure with a CT-100. I sold the CT-100 to a fellow in Pennsylvania, made a tidy profit on that deal, and ultimately ended up buying this set back. I'll be six feet under when this Hoffman goes on the market again.

21AXP22 is good, the strongest I've ever actually seen, and the chassis is recapped. It's now passing good clean video, just have to track down some arcing HV cage.

An excellent example of why the I and Q axes were chosen - practically no Q axis details in that scene at all.

My RCA, CTC-7B, "Sanford" 1958

My only 1950's Color Roundie is my CTC-7B, "The Sanford" from 1958, it's the oldest (to date) color set that I have ever owned, or worked on. I still have to re-cap it, and replace it's CRT, hopefully this winter! I got it basically working, after I bought it from the original owner's Estate Sale, in Niles, MI, about two years ago. I had to replace burned open wires under the 5U4GB LV Rectifier sockets, and an open fuse. That got it going, but needs Electrolytics, and vertical and horizontal caps, as well as it's original and very tired 21CYP22 CRT. I was able to secure a good emission used 21CYP22, so it's on stand-by, waiting to be installed!

Big Dave.

I think the CTC-7 "Sanford" model is one of the most beautiful 50's era color sets. It's compact consolette style with the louvre grill work below the screen was a perfect size for the average home. I hope you have the legs or can, at least, find replacements to complete this set.

Kamakiri 12-19-2016 12:28 PM

I absolutely loved the one I bought at ETF two years ago, but my wife ended up losing her job two months later, so off it went to another home :(

BigDavesTV 12-20-2016 11:28 AM

Thanks, Steve D. I do have it's legs, these pictures were taken right after I unloaded it from my pickup, before I cleaned it up, or did anything to it. The top of the set and really the whole thing, looked great after a good cleaning with Murphy's Oil Soap and warm water! The set came from it's original home, near a lake, but had been re-located to the walk-out basement, for years, after they got something newer for the Living Room. I got it basically working, then stopped, to wait for a CRT, before re-capping. About a year and a half later, I was able to do some "Horse Trading" and secure a good, original, used 21CYP22, I was glad, because I really didn't want to convert to 21FBP, in that set. So now, I have the CRT, I can soon begin the re-capping, then install and set up the replacement CRT. Hopefully, it will be one of this winter's "finished" projects, within the next few months!

Big Dave,

That's good news re: the legs.
Look forward to your progress reports on the Sanford. I had a chance to obtain this model which belonged to my long time friend, TV historian and collector, Ed Reitan.
After his passing, I and several others were cleaning out his collection, much of which went to the ETF. His CTC-7 Sanford sat against the wall and was mine if I wanted it. I had absolutely no room for it. I can't recall where it wound up. Perhaps at the ETF auction. Attached is a photo I snapped of the set as we were trying to inventory all of Ed's TV related items.

I was the one who bought it at the convention. It's in Buffalo. Due to my wife losing her job at the time, I sold it for what I paid to my buddy Ed, a local collector (VK name roundscreen)...who has it completely restored and working well :)

Tim,

Thanks for reminding me. My memory isn't what it used to be. In fact, I now recall removing the Sanford's legs and packing them in the shipping crate for transport to Ohio. Wishing you and certainly your wife all the best, during this difficult time, in the new year.

Best

Here's my 1959 RCA CTC9 Kenbridge. It's still not restored yet but will be by this coming summer. I found a like new remote control for it recently.

old_tv_nut 12-20-2016 09:24 PM

Someone sent me a message asking what model my CTC-5 is, and now I can't find the message.

It's a 21CT7885, Westcott (Super chassis) with mahogany finish.

The failed 21AXP22 that was in it, which had gone to air and turned out to have a leak in an unknown location after Scotty regunned it, was a replacement installed in 1962 according to a sticker on the back of the receiver. The leak was later found to be at a ding in the faceplate weld, by use of the helium leak detector at the ETF meeting a few years ago. The tube, which had to be necked to use the leak detector and was donated by me as a guinea pig to test the technique, is still at ETF, with hopes it can someday be both regunned and sealed.

CTC5 The Chandler

Needs some light cabinet work. It looks better in person than in the pictures. I'm going to try to save the original finish. Missing the volume and brightness knobs, the high voltage cage cover (of course) and the back cover. Also needs a new "Deluxe" emblem on the front. Has the original 21AXP22 picture tube, which I have not yet tested.

Hi Volt,

About a year ago vintage TV collector & restorer Bob Galanter was offering
reproductions of the RCA "Deluxe" emblem. I've attached a photo of the one I purchased. Not sure if Bob still has any left. You can e-mail him at: Bob@antiquetvguy.com.

Best,
-Steve D.

Walter really nice color on your 21CT55. Just wish you would take shots of the screen with the lights off or with light not shining on the screen. The glare ruins the contrast. Never the less, I can see you have great color rendition on your set.

I realized the problem and took some more with the lights off. It looks a lot better without the glare on the screen. They can be found at
