Hey, I use Win 98SE 800mhz and firefox 1.508 and these forums work fine....

The problem is with the ADs and scripts they load. go to google and find the site that
has old programs. Get a copy of NoScript that will run on your version of FF. That should
more than take care of it.

These forums are very old technology and display well on very old browsers. Take out the
scripts by the AD companies and this forum will also run on Netscape 4.7, and 6, and 7.
Yah, that's right, my old 200mhz mac system 8.6 running netscape 7 will load
this forum...

You might also want to check your name servers as they can cause complete loading
problems. Try a public name server you can find on google, or use google's NS's....

The machine is powerful enough for XP: Pentium IV 2GHz, Asus P4B-266 motherboard, Mega-tower format, 3x 120GB HDD, 3.5" floppy, Asus CD-ROM, LiteOn 48x CD-Burner, DVD via SCSI, G-Force graphics.
2GB RAM but i would add more (WIN98SE wouldn't allow that).

My concerns:
- Buying XP today, preferably a french version, i need the AZERTY keyboard with accented characters for text work.

XP not being supported by Microsoft any more, what about the final registration of the OS?

Would this imply the need of a "cracked" version?

Non-english keyboard support in windows is something I don't have any knowledge on. I hear Ubuntu is good with foreign language keyboards.

There are various places like 'the pirate bay' where 'cracked' (if I'm properly understanding what you mean by that) OS versions can be gotten, However I don't know if they have the language support you want.

You may have to do some digging to determine what the best course of action is for you. If you depend on that computer then I suggest getting a cheap hard drive, install whatever OS configuration you want to try on it, and confirm it meets your needs before over writing the your current OS on your current hard drive.

And for all I know 98 may be a good OS when it is not run on a memory starved, virus/malware infested clunker. Mine used to take long enough to load/preform many programs that one could walk away and make a sandwich while waiting. What was the end of the OS was when something took out it's ability to connect to the internet...It was using a dial-up modem back then, but latter attempts to get it to work with LAN networking also failed so it came time to start anew...

Whatever you choose to do with it I wish you luck.

Also an important thing to do.....

Open a DOS window and type ipconfig/release_all

then type ipconfig/renew_all

This is a win 98 fix for some connection problems for win 98. I have had to do it
plenty of times....

IE is V5.5 and won't connect either. Being limited to FireFox versions compatible with WIN98SE, i can't upgrade the browser.

Hmmmmmm Im on 98se also and Im running IE6 and things thankfully load good... The site is quite fast :)

I 99% of the time have ACTIVE SCRIPTING disabled which helps quite a bit :) (Its safer and stuff loads much faster)

Im glad to see more 98se users..... 98 is an amazing OS!!

What happens on Firefox 2.0??? (It should work as Firefox 0.8 works fine (I have tried 0.8 so I know (I dont like it as much as MyIE2 though (IE wrapper))))

Hi to All,

First of all, many Thanks! for all your advice & wisdom.

VK with WIN 98SE + Firefox 2.00.20 works again as of today.

I did nothing, therefore a mystery! like last time.

Advice needed:
I am going to convert the old gal' to XP.
Having good USB support + over 120Gb drives is the incentive.

I've purchased some new legit genuine Microsoft software. One was already installed, the other 2 are new, never used.
Question: as XP is no longer supported, will i be able to get a definitive post-installation product key when the machine connects to MS for registration?

You may ask, why XP rather than WIN 7 or 8.1?
Simple: i use a very old version of ACT! which won't run on either of the above. It runs on XP.

I've been told about running a "Virtual XP machine" inside WIN 7 or 8, but i'm not familiar and ...scared. Sounds complicated.

Best Regards

Yesterday evening and today I've been having issues with threads on this site loading slowly or not at all...Unless I try multiple times.

Firefox has been giving me connection reset and site not found messages on this site and only this site...I think there is something wrong here.

Dude111 12-26-2014 01:05 AM

For months I have had wierd occurences with here,AK,fantasticforum.com/1res and one other site....

My Subnet Mask changes to 255.0.0.0 and these sites wont load with that.... I have to RELEASE ALL AND RENEW ALL (Ip info) then my subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0 and all sites load correctly.......

THIS DIDNT EVER USED TO HAPPEN....... My lease is 2 days (Would making the lease longer solve it??)

WHY DOES MY Subnet Mask KEEP CHANGING???????? -- I dont think it has anything to do with these sites, but why is this happening??

Kamakiri 12-26-2014 08:00 AM

Part of it might be the fact that your OS (Windows 98) is old enough to drive, vote, and smoke :smoke:

There might be a work-around on your end, but I'd imagine most sites aren't designed to be compatible with something so old.....

lnx64 12-26-2014 09:51 AM

Your gateway should NOT ever be 255.255.255.255. Just saying.

Dude111 12-26-2014 03:13 PM

OOPS I made a mistake.... Its my subnet Mask,it is usually 255.255.255.0

Often it changes to 255.0.0.0 and these sites wont load......

lnx64 12-28-2014 06:51 PM

Well, your TCP/IP stack is bombed. Not the site's issue, definitely an issue on your computer.

Dude111 12-29-2014 03:20 PM

Hmmmmmmmm It didnt used to happen though.........

Ill watch for the stack, maybe its overflowing.......

Thank you bud (I didnt think the sites were causing anything)

lnx64 03-07-2015 01:18 PM

This is happening to me right now. Related to the AK server move? I'm thinking so but wanted to verify.

Once in a while when I use my win 98 box, this site will not load, most everything
else will, and I have to use ipconfig to release all and renew all then it runs really fast...
Only about a once every 2 - 3 month thing.... I bet it's in a once in a blue moon hop....
Maybe it takes a hop thru the nsa...... 98 too old for their stuff to be hidden...

.

lnx64 03-07-2015 03:35 PM

Yea BSD doesn't have ipconfig. ;)

Actually, 98 had winipcfg.

It's only this site that's doing it right now. Other devices affected too.
