Ugly!
Weird how things happen! So, the CTC-11 is nearly complete, awaiting some tweaks to bring it back to watchable condition. A friend of mine who knew of my CTC-11 project wondered if I wanted another “Roundie”. I said sure, I’d look at it but my criteria for additional roundies are tight: either something blond, or a model older than the 11 I already own.
He found a CTC-9F! I got it home last evening, and I don’t want to start a spew of banter about style, but this thing is ugly! That is my opinion. It’s a “Paterson”, model 210 CK 916. This thing is so ugly; you have to appreciate it for how hideous it looks! Who was the industrial designer who ‘thunk’ this thing up!? I think it was a fantastic find; its odd design appeals to me, walnut cabinet, 3-speaker “Panoramic sound”, safety glass so no cataract to contend with! There are other more “furniture-like” sets that don’t appeal to me at all. I like the traditional, simplistic designs of TV’s and console radios – radios that look like radios, and TV’s that look like TV’s, not TV’s that have that carved up French Provincial look, yuck! |
Ugly is as ugly does, I think it looks GREAT...If you don't want it, I think I could find a place here in my heart-Or living room- to love it, pet it, play w/it 'n' call it "George"...(grin)

I think it's utsukushi!:)

@Sandy, I could never give this one up -- it's defiantly a keeper! @Phil, my CTC11 has the Hi-Fi sound, but never really sounded that good -- I'd reserve final judgement on it after the sound gets a realignment. Once the 11 is completed -- only then will I tackle the Paterson CTC9... My friend who found the 9 for me says "I've been bitten". He might be right!! |

That is correct! |

I had a -9F once, The Atherton. This one you have sure is....interesting.

Ugly?! If you want to see ugly look at what was sitting in the owner's driveway.:D

Hi Bill,
Glad to see you got this one. I think this is a really nice example of art deco, or something very close to it. :D I thought for sure this was going to be a CTC 10, but I guess a 9 makes it even more desirable. I wonder if you can pull the CRT straight out the back of this cabinet, or do you need to drop it down to clear the rear part of the cabinet? Pretty funky cabinet for sure. Looks to be in very nice condition. Please show us many more photos as time permits. Kevin |
oh, I dunno,
There was a time where I would have thought that it was ugly. Now I think it's the coolest color roundie I've seen!
|
I think that it is cool. it is like someone in the 50's saw a modern flat screen wondered what it would look like hung off a console, liked it, and then built a console to look like that.
If it had sat on CL until after my college finals week I'd have tried to convince my folks to let me get it. |
that edsel is really not ugly.i worked on a few of those and they were actually very smooth riding, powerful cars with many innovations.they were no uglier than some of the other cars back then, especially the rambler line.i think the ctc 9 pictured was a little unusual but not ugly.strange, weird, yes, but ugly,no.of course when i was young i thought phyllis diller was kind of hot!
|
I had two '59 Edsels, a Ranger 2 door sedan, and a Ranger 4 door hardtop. Realistically, I don't think that many manufacturers made an uglier car. My '58 Ranger, though, was sexay :D

Sumerian (transliterated - I can't type in cuneiform signs!)
In the first sentence I just agree that the set is beautiful, in the 2nd I say that I wrote in Sumerian. I never thought the Edsel was a bad looking car - Well it's not much of a looker compared to other 59 models, but better looking than most anything made in the past 30 years or so. |

I could name fifty cars, and one current company's entire line, that are UGLY. Edsels are great! Back on subject... I was just looking at a picture of that TV a few days ago after getting my CTC-7, and I thought it was... unusual. ;) Nice find! I wondered if any of those survived. |

すごいねありがとう。 (cool or awesome and thanks!) What made you learn Sumerian? Or, did you just do that for fun? Gomen! (childish I'm sorry) for being off topic BTW.... I Promise to speak more english from now on;3 |

And nobody ever talks about the 60 Edsel, which even though I do like the 58-59s, I think is the best looking of the three. So what was this thread about - Sumerian, Japanese, Edsels, girls with tails, um ... CTC 9s. I noticed that this cabinet "The Paterson" was used for both the CTC9 and 10. How much difference really was there between the ctc 9 and 10 chassis anyway? |
Thanks for the info, Adam. I think that it's cool that you're into that stuff! And....um.....yeah....this thread is about all those things....I guess :3
As for the ten, there isn't much difference. As far as I know, only a few circuit mods were made. But, I could be wrong...... |
Don't EVEN get me STARTED on contemporary Fugly cars....Lessee...Nissan Quest, Lexus SUV, Infinity SUV...The one that looks like an especially angry Crab...Nissan Altima...About any/all cars that have "Aggressive" headlamp designs...
|
Don't forget the Datsun F-10 and the Subaru 360 - laughed off the pages of Consumer Reports showing a photo of it squaring off against a watermelon!
|
Hehehe...I remember Road & Track "Testing" a 360 in 1969...the WHOLE CAR barely stretched from the front bumper of a '69 Caddy convertible to the trailing edge if the Cad's door..I think the 360 had the same displacement as maybe 2 of the Cad's 8 cylinders....The motor looked like it MIGHT be able to be used as a starter motor for the Cad...Maybe...Seems like the late, lamented Henry N. Manney, 3rd had Big Fun w/it, though...

Subaru, yes I got two now cuz they're so good in bad weather, but I would have felt like a %$#@ driving one of those early POS back in the 70's. I remember looking at Toyota's and Dot-soons while riding in my parent's 68 Beetle and thinking those were MUCH lower on the automotive food chain.
I thought I saw odd furniture designs from RCA, but some of the slab-on-grade houses from the same era are similar. The top of the cabinet is split-level and I bet the owner thought it was cute until they tried to put a doily on top and arrange some pictures. At least it would de-emphasize the tenna-rotor toward the back. |

Even back then, you had to take CU with a grain of salt; they were ranting against chrome window crank knobs and what the driver couldn't reach while wearing the (non-retractable roof-mounted) shoulder belt. But the Subaru 360 turned out to be a pretty sorry car. Not long after, CU tested their first Toyota Corolla and rated it "not acceptable" because of the unreasonable amount of pedal pressure it took to brake the car (well over 100 ft/lbs.) |
Its grown
So, the old and still ugly Paterson has grown on me as I look at it! The odd design looks like something with a futuristic look back in its day. Not really sure what the designers were thinking (or smoking) when they conjured this set up, but I’m even more excited to have it in addition to my Brookfield CTC-11.
I like Electronic M’s comment on how it looks like someone hung a flat screen on a console cabinet, your right! Once I had the Brookfield, I said the only way I’d get another roundie is if I found something older, or blond… With limited space, I hope I find my blond roundie someday and nothing else! That said; I’d still have a hard time passing up other local deals should they surface… I’ll keep the group posted with the Paterson restoration once it commences. |
I like it a lot, I think it's very "Mid-Century modern".
|
Wow, I somehow missed the follow up pictures back when you posted them.
That cabinet sure is in nice shape. The set could really grow on me, and for sure it's very unique in the furniture world. A good example to keep around. |

Nice TV and where do you stand with it? I know that the holiday season usually gets us sidetracked... |
I like the set a lot. You probably wont see any more of those pop up ever.
ugly car = Nissan cube. I drive mainly Volvo's(vintage Cadillac's and a 92F-150), yeah boring but reliable and good in bad weather(AWD) and definitely safe! |
I like the new tv, the cabinet appears flawless. Thanks for all of those great pictures too!

Greetings! Sorry for the delay in replying!
Yes, the pending holidays have been keeping me busy; another thing keeping me busy is my first roundie; The Brookfield CTC-11. I’ve been reading up on purity and convergence. The weekends keep slipping by and not much work has happened to the Brookfield in the past 3-4 weeks. Once I’m satisfied the Brookfield is complete, then I’ll assess where the Paterson is at. To be honest I haven’t even cracked off the back to peek inside! The seller claimed it had a raster and static out of the speakers, my friend who picked it up for me verified that. That is as much as I’ve done with the Paterson, I won’t plug it in until it has fresh parts. It is flawless, one scratch on the right side, other than that, nothing. One member commented on the odd split level cabinet and how a person would have had a hard time placing a decorative doily on top; that probably helped keep the decorative junk off the top, and resulted in preservation! The Paterson is a way cool set; I can’t imagine many are still in existence today. From other comments about its design, I'm inclined to go with "Mid-Century Modern", perhaps the successor to deco? I’ll keep the readers posted once the Brookfield is complete! Thanks!! Bill |

I suppose it would look good in Don Draper's office. |
