Magnavox Roundie Aircraft Carrier

I've got a line on a Magnavox roundie combo unit in Phoenix, with tambour doors. Trying to arrange pickup within the next couple of days. Will post pix as soon as I can.

consoleguy67 11-16-2012 12:29 PM

Is it anything like the one in my avatar?

oldtvman 11-16-2012 01:59 PM

I just parted out on of those, I didn't have any more room. But the good news is it had a Sylvania RE crt in it.

consoleguy67 11-16-2012 02:39 PM

Mine has that crt also. Nice bright picture.

hi_volt 11-16-2012 04:22 PM

I'm pretty sure it's the same model as your avatar, except it's dark wood. Hopefully I'll have a picture soon.

consoleguy67 11-16-2012 05:40 PM

If it's the one I think it is, it was for sale on E-Bay a while ago for $1,000.00

hi_volt 11-16-2012 06:27 PM

I remember that set. Another collector here in Tucson bought that one. This is a different seller and was listed on CL about 6 weeks ago. I've been in contact with the seller over the past few days, and we have a deal. It's just a matter of making arrangements for which day to pick it up. I can't wait!

consoleguy67 11-16-2012 06:49 PM

Best of luck with it. I really enjoy mine.

Here's the picture from the CL ad that the seller just re-sent to me.

Gonna guess CTC-15 clone-C43 chassis. That tri-color emblem lights up at the bottom. Going to be in Chandler for TG hi-volt. Looking forward to warmer weather. PM me if you need any help etc. while I'm there or if you need anything like a tube or 2 or 5.

consoleguy67 11-17-2012 08:56 AM

It looks so much better in the Fruitwood cabinet then the Antique Ivory.

I think the antique ivory looks way cool too! You don't see too many of those.

wa2ise 11-17-2012 02:57 PM

When you do get it home, line up a few toy airplanes atop it and take a picture. :D

consoleguy67 11-18-2012 12:25 AM

If you're picking it up, make sure you bring some very strong people. That set is HEAVY!!

hi_volt 11-19-2012 11:21 AM

Finally have been able to arrange for a pick-up time. Tomorrow mid day. Look for pix once I get it home and unloaded. Yippee!

Sandy G 11-19-2012 11:39 AM

consoleguy67 11-19-2012 01:15 PM

Yep, I about killed myself on mine.....several times. I've moved it about 5 times over the years, up the stairs, down the stairs, in a storage locker, back out and back in again.LOL! It's the same set but a rectangular screen. Weighs an efffin ton!

OK......back home after a long day of driving, loading and unloading. Here are some pictures of the set. It is a Magnavox model 2MR556K in Fruitwood with a C39 television chassis. The lady I bought it from is the original owner who is 81 years old. She told me that the TV hasn't worked in a long time, and she's just been using it as a stand for current TV. The inside is really dusty but looks totally unmolested. It has the original Magnavox 21FJP22 tube, which started out a little flat, but is waking up nicely with running the filaments for a while. The photo of the CRT tester shows what I measured after about 10 minutes of wake-up. I'll leave it cook for an hour or so and re-test. The set has the original remote control and the 45RPM adapter for the turntable. The amp and tuner are solid state, and there are a 15" woofer and horn tweeter on each side of the cabinet.

tvtimeisfun 11-21-2012 07:25 AM

Nice lookin set glad you saved it from the scrapadoos tobad the radio and amp is not tubes post pictures when fixxed...Timothy

magnasonic66 11-21-2012 08:13 AM

That is some kind of pretty, I'm glad you got it! I think a lot of the sellers really are glad to see someone who appreciates their old sets go to a good home. Enjoy the heck out of it!

consoleguy67 11-21-2012 09:20 AM

Just a little FYI: The remote will also allow you to change records.

DaveWM 11-21-2012 09:30 AM

even though its not tube, those old astrosonics sound pretty good. I have a couple and they do very well.

consoleguy67 11-21-2012 10:16 AM

Also a little FYI: The convergence board is on a seperate panel that drops down from the bottom of the set. It has enough wire so you can sit away from the set to see the screen as you make the adjustments. Very convenient! If you need the convergence procedures, let me know.

joemama99 11-21-2012 11:55 AM

Great!!!

Looks great!I have a 1967 imperial astrosonic with a built in reel-to reel tape deck that really rocks the house.I am sure that one will, too.

Charlie 11-21-2012 12:19 PM

that set is awesome!! Was there a pic of the remote, or did I over look it?

Bill R 11-21-2012 10:21 PM

The convergence board in that is unscrewed from its current position, flipped around and mounted on the two screws along the top of the set. This allows you to see the crt while adjusting it. This is typical of sets, especially RCA and their clones, from the early 60's. I think Zenith was about the most convenient arrangment with the controls behind the speaker.

consoleguy67 11-23-2012 02:32 PM

I looked at your pictures again; your set has a different chassis then mine.

It looks like a CTC12 to me. Is that a 6DQ5 horiz out.
I didn't think Magnavox built a solid state stereo that early. Especially, one that powerful, to drive that speaker system.
Very impressive! :thmbsp:

consoleguy67 11-24-2012 07:33 PM

The AstroSonic series came out in late 1962.

hi_volt 11-24-2012 08:35 PM

Just back from visiting the family over Thanksgiving. The horizontal output is a 6DQ5. The TV chassis is a C39, not sure what the equivalent RCA chassis is. The remote is two button Magnavox Phantom. I just bought a spare remote on the bay.

Charlie 11-24-2012 09:38 PM

I have one of those Phantom 2-button remotes... the one that blows air?

The CTC12's were the last to use the 6DQ5 tubes and the '15s went to the 6JE6's plus were unique in using a solid state "stick" focus rectifier diode. After that RCA went back to tube rectification.
