RCA CTC-5 Deluxe "Whitby"

5 Attachment(s)
Purchased this off craigslist from the original home in Grosse Point Farms, MI.
Very clean set with the original 21AXP22A. No high voltage when purchased...seller said he "turned it on and only got sound". The chassis looked completely original with no replacement caps or service. The last RCA service tag is dated 1964 and has the same address I bought the set from. No service info was written on the tag, was there a preventative service club or something back then? The chassis now has all new paper and filter caps, a few resistor replacements and 2 or 3 tubes needed to be changed. It's working now but has a few convergence issues to work out. i've never had luck with convergence but hope to get this one better someday. I'll post many photos of it's current condition. please tell me if it's acceptable or close enough. Looks fairly good to my untrained eye.
Thanks for any thoughts.
Jim

First look...

wow, nice score

:thmbsp:

DaveWM 09-03-2013 08:31 PM

you very close on the convergence. I could do a bit of touch up on the dynamic on my CTC-5 as well. I know the directions are a little bit more involved than on the later models like the CTC-7. I have the field service guide, if I do mine I will make a video of it.

The convergence doesn't really bother me when a program is running. I do notice the purity is off a little since I touched up the convergence though...Always the same story on these vintage sets...Adjusting one thing introduces a problem in another. Guess it's part of the "Fun" of the hobby! :-)

A convergence video would be wonderful! I hope you can post one someday.

reeferman 09-03-2013 11:16 PM

I like the 5N chassis. Rock solid set.

Bad news is the convergence on that thing is an absolute bear. And I mean a bear. Good luck with it.

As far as purity, don't forget the "field equalizing magnets" around the diameter of the CRT. They are accessible once the beauty ring on the front of the set is removed. (remove the pencil box and you will see the 2 spring loaded clips that hold the ring in place)

Phil

DaveWM 09-04-2013 06:23 AM

yea, I had to spray some lube on those magnets as they were a bit rusty on mine, and then you are supposed to retract them before degaussing the CRT.

classicradios 09-04-2013 07:02 AM

Purity adjustment will be my next project. I've degaussed the CRT a few times already. I need to clean behind the safety glass anyway.

DaveWM 09-04-2013 07:08 AM

did you retract the magnets before the degauss? IIRC you must turn them CCW fully.

classicradios 09-04-2013 07:13 AM

I didn't retract the magnets first. I'll do that today.

DaveWM 09-04-2013 07:22 AM

they do make a diff when trying for edge purity. good luck with it.:thmbsp:

classicradios 09-04-2013 03:10 PM

I turned a few of the "field equalizing magnets" CCW but they just seem to spin in place and never stop. Am I doing something wrong? At least the safety glass and CRT face are clean now.

DaveWM 09-04-2013 03:17 PM

On mine they would retract into metal cups. you need ot get a flashlight on them and watch from behind while someone else spins, they should screw into the cups.

Funny you mention Wiz of Oz...I have it in the video archives but chose not to use it for that very reason! :-)

I'm trying to find a 4:3 version of the movie "Suddenly Susan" starring Debbie Reynolds in the 1950's. Beautiful color that should look fantastic on these color sets.

I have that Lost in Space attachment open in a tab for the day, and have been peeking at it all afternoon, thanks again.....

Here's a link to a video I made a few years ago.

What a beauty! Really nice, I have never owned one, or even worked on any "roundie" older than a CTC-11! Did you have to restore the CRT, or was the emission that nice after getting it working? I also like your display with the "Nipper's" and the Vogue Record on top! Vogue is another Detroit original!

reeferman 09-04-2013 11:23 PM

If my memory serves me correctly...
The threaded shaft of the edge magnet assembly rides against a stiff piece of spring wire. If you can grab the front part (adjustment end) with a pair of needle nose pliers, push/pull the shaft in and out. Or go in from inside the set and push the magnets towards the front.

Emission was that nice at first try following a full recap. I don't have a CRT checker to test but it looks great to me.

Thanks!
I'll enlist the help of a friend and give it a go.
Stay tuned....

That is a very nice looking set. Congratulations on owning it and ultimately getting it going. Do you have pictures of the chassis after capacitor replacement?

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Chassis "After" photos
I replaced the remaining paper caps under the chassis after these photos were taken. Had to order the .39 caps.

WoW! Jim, that IS a great score! Awesome condition. I think you made the right choice to keep it! When I get a place again, I can FINALLY get my '5 all put back together, she has a good 21AX now!

Thanks Mark,
I never seem to keep color sets in the collection and always regret it when they leave. This time I'm resisting and keeping one long term. I should add a later roundie that I can run more often though. I'm tempted to turn the 5 on everyday and that's probably not wise with a 21AXP22A, Right?

Why not? It's no less stable than a glass tube, as long as there's no air in it...

I always thought the metal CRT's were more fragile. Is the biggest difference finding replacements? Metal 21AXP22A's are harder to find than 21FJP's?

miniman82 09-06-2013 01:57 PM

Not more fragile, just more susceptible to losing vacuum if you ding the rim where it's welded together. It's more of a concern when the tube is out of the set, in it's rightful place, it's just as good as an all glass one. Yes, they are very hard to find. Ask Mark how long he waited for one for the Wingate, and how much he gave when one came his way...

I got lucky, an ARF member sent me one for the cost of shipping. Said he didn't know if it was any good, and mailed it Greyhound uncovered in a ratty cardboard box. Made it just fine, and it's still happy in my CTC-4. Thanks, Tom!

LOL! I waited 4 years... and paid, well, like a lot for it! :):D

6GH8cowboy 09-12-2013 06:37 AM

Those remaining caps may make a difference for the convergence and settle it right in. Is the delay line OK? It looks like the color info is shifted slightly.
This is truely a great find. We dont have sleepers like this in S Florida. Every one got rid of their "junk" before moving here.
