Zenith H2438R "Aldrich" restoration
Let's keep the porthole part rolling. Next up an H2438R "Aldrich" from the same estate sales as the blonde I started earlier.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0ddd113a_c.jpg Also, picked up a Muntz I'll talk about in a separate thread. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...08093e73_c.jpg It is good condition and it's all there back, knobs etc. There are remains of a felt pad in each corner of the top so I assume it had a glass top at some point. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1b2c14f0_c.jpg It also came with the original owner's and service manual. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9c11752d_c.jpg Appears to have a rebuilt (red cone) 16GP4 picture tube and it tests good. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0dd4973b_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1d478778_c.jpg Built in June of 1950. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fd516119_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...78be197e_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fddace49_c.jpg |
Here's the beast up on the workbench.
They switch the tuner to the opposition side and rotated it 90 degrees as compared to earlier models. Probably to make room for the larger picture tube. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a7f0b3fe_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...1c93da0b_c.jpg Dual 6BQ6 horitzontal output tubes wired in parallel. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...995ef75b_c.jpg Very clean underneath. A bit more refined and simplified compared to older models. Looks like they dropped the phone-vision socket https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7a17322c_c.jpg I only see one old repair. Someone tacked in an electrolytic can cap near the front. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...387653ea_c.jpg Finally, here's the power supply and audio amp. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b1c2e816_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c544e235_c.jpg |

Bob, I have three sets in queue and maybe this will be inspiration to do the Zenith that I have, albeit a 12" set. But mine is about 99% original with the flyback below deck and looking "Well Done" crispy. Thanks for the pictures. |
You're welcome. I'll be doing one of the crispy, under the chassis flyback portholes soon as well

I got lucky and was able to make a console supply work (didn't know my set was missing a supply) by replicating the bottom sheet metal....Now if I could find a replacement for the missing volume knob I'd be set. |
Starting with the power resistors. These are all bad including the candohm mounted to the chassis
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2799d696_c.jpg |
I have not even started to address the candohm resistors in my Brittany yet, but they seem to be OK, as power seems to be fine, but I will most likely change them anyway as I don't like where they are placed, inside the HV cage seems a poor place for the bleeder network, the FBT gets hot enough w/o any help from power resistors near it! :thumbsdn:
|
Emerson did that too in the 571 model. Sure, let's cook the poor wax coated flyback!

Hey bandersen you had told me how to add a10volt bias to a crt tester was that series or parallel? Was it g1 or g2 because I’m not certain I did it correctly.
|
Are yo usure tht was me? What are you testing? I believe the Sencore CR70 adds 10 volts to the G1 bias when in electrostatic CRT test mode.
|
Yes was you but was like a year ago and you did say 10 volts but not sure . if it’s g1 do I break g1 wire and place the 10 volts In series ? Testing 7jp4 with bk 440. Is it negative to g1 and positive to g2 of the 10 volts ?
|
A better question might be why are you trying to test a 7JP4? The phosphor on these usually wears out long before the emissions go bad.
All I know is the only tester I have that supports a 7JP4 has a switch that says (Scope -10V bias). I would think that adds negative 10 volts to the grid with respect to the cathode, but have never measured it. I would try the 440 as is before modifying it. |

It should lower the needle, not raise it during the cutoff test.
Not sure what you mean by truthful. Don't think I've ever found a 7JP4 with bad emissions - it's the phosphor that wear out first. Probably why Sencore dropped the 7JP4 from the tube chart in later versions. |
Got burned a bit by ordering parts based on the parts list rather than observing the actual chassis. Zenith listed some of these sand coated power resistors as only 2 or 3 watts and I got undersized parts. Just ordered up some 7 watters.
Also, the white cap is a 0.47uF in series with the horizontal yoke windings. I used a Mallory M150 polyester film cap for now but ordered up a more robust polypropylene cap rated for pulse applications. Leason learned, review the chassis before ordering parts! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...17482dc2_c.jpg |

Speaking of caps, if I remember correctly, a new style 0.047uF film type should be OK to replace a old paper 0.05, as the .05s are so hard to get, and the 0.047uF are all over the place, and a a good price. :D
|
Of course, they differ by less than 10%. Anyway, there are no 0.05 caps in my set
|
Finished replacing the paper caps and open power resistors last night and fired it up.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f2e0b7cc_c.jpg It produces a raster, hiss out of speaker and the tuner is creating some snow. Can't display a test pattern though. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a25fd026_c.jpg After running a few minutes, the main filter cap was getting quite hot so I shut it down before it vented. Another twist lock on the main chassis was also getting warm. I'll tackle those next. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9cba0e97_c.jpg Also starting some cabinet work. There's masking tape reside on the control panel and screen bezel I need to remove. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...295c2785_c.jpg |
Kinda reminds me of the Crosley 9-407.
Here's a peek inside the big tuner drum. Each strip has caps and coils for a single channel. I believe they claim its UHF ready meaning the tuner LO can handle the higher frequencies. Just pop in some UHF strips for your broadcast area. LO uses a 6C4 oscillator. I am able to sort of pick up a signal as I rotate through the channels. I can hear and FM radio station and briefly see my test image. I thought it might be dirty contacts, but some testing revealed bad tubes including a 6CB6 in the tune with no emissions. Also found a weak 6AU6 IF tube, 12AT7 and 17AU7 AGC and video amp I'll pop in some replacements shortly. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6823e74e_c.jpg Replacing some electrolytics also increased the vertical deflection. Have not been shocked...yet... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...07445873_c.jpg |
Replacing the tubes didn't help much so I tried signal injection. Here's I'm injecting composite video directly into the grid of the first video amp.
While hooking it up I noticed I missed the 0.047uF coupling cap to that grid. I expect replacing it will improve the things. Injecting with that cap in place, I do get an image but vertical height, linearity and hold are all terrible. I expect replacing the electrolytics in the vertical circuit will help with all that. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b1d59949_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bfe0e9eb_c.jpg |
Here's one of the channel sections.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...63c3cb62_c.jpg I dug deeper into the tuner to lubricate the fine tuning shaft. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5a799734_c.jpg Hmm, that's doesn't look right. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...231ae307_c.jpg I think it was a 1.5K resistor but Sams only shows 1/2 watt resistors in the tuner. I'll trace out the wiring to confirm. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...04de1e19_c.jpg |
Ha!
I KNOW WHAT IS ON THAT TV IN THE BACKGROUND! https://www.scifihistory.net/uploads...52023_orig.jpg Season 1 episode 1, Breakaway! :D  |
LOL, I figured someone would

This set will be going back on the bench soon. Replacing that crispy resistor did not get me great reception so more work to do.
Also, our local radio club recently contacted me about some TV chassis found in a collectors estate they were helping clear out. Luck would have it one of them is the same (or very similar) as my set so I have a source of spare parts if needed. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2db93014_c.jpg There is also a little bonus. This set has the "lazy bones" remote channel changer option! It consists of a small power transformer, motor + capacitor, latching relay and some gears. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...141f2616_c.jpg Very easy to unmount and transplant. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d851ef22_c.jpg Assuming it works, that leaves one challenge - I don't have the handheld remote It would have fit into this cradle that mounts on the outside of the cabinet. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7de3616f_c.jpg So I'm on a quest to find one... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...72e7d048_c.jpg |
