Grundig - Majestic 2077 AM/FM/SW radio
 

This was among the radios I got from a lady who was cleaning out her late husbands' radio stash. It appears that the dial will need re-stringing and the set is dead except for the tube filaments lighting up. It has a large, oval speaker on the front and two electrostatic tweeters on the sides. The audio output tube is an EL84 and there is a green eye tube. Has anyone had any experience with this animal?

Those Grundigs sound amazing when they're working. They are also pretty reliable. Check the selenium stack rectifier. They look quite different than the American kind, and were typically a full wave bridge configuration in one rectangular block. If it fails, you get no B+. Replace it with modern diodes.

It's also, of course, full of paper caps and old electrolytics - it might need recapping. I've had good luck with German sets, the parts seem to be quite good. They typically just work.

The dial stringing on those is odd too. There are two dial pointers, and the tuning knob will only move the one that it needs to. So, in FM mode, it moves the FM pointer, and in AM or SW mode, it moves the other.

I have a 3028 that I absolutely love. You'll like the way it sounds!

cosmetically looks good, doesnt work. Powers up, lights up etc no sound. I got an estimate to replair/restore for WAY too much more than I want to spend, can someone assist in me getting this thing working? TIA!J.R

The first thing I'd do is obtain a schematic and check the power supply for proper output voltage(s). Use caution as there is several hundred volts involved here. That will get your attention if you get across it.

If it uses a selenium rectifier, it's possible that it's weak or dead. I'd also replace the electrolytic power supply caps while I was in there. You could also have an open resistor in the power supply.

If all the power supply voltages check out, you could have a problem in the audio circuit. Again, check voltages in the audio circuit as per the schematic. I recently fixed a Grundig console for a guy that had an open primary winding on the audio output transformer.

For voltage checks, an el cheapo digital multimeter (DMM) from someplace like walmart will do fine for now. You should also get a good pencil soldering iron of at least 60 watts. You'll also need rosin core electronics solder, de-soldering braid, a hand held desoldering pump, and various hand tools that you probably already have.
