Did anyone else see this?

I saw this a few weeks ago on the Chicago version of that list. After I put my eyes back in their sockets, I mailed them...and mailed...and mailed. All were bounced back, rejected by Clist. The listing even got some text changes while it was up. Any ideas? A joke? Or did someone steal it. I removed the id's to prevent carpet-bombing of the list.

From the listing (as saved as a Word doc);

we have an old 60's rca victor tv set which looks really cool. its in really nice condition. its a model c-t-100 and it says "color tv" on the front. we plugged it in and it got some static from the speaker but we couldnt get a picture. we dont know if its something wrong with the tv of if we are not adjusting something right.
it would make a cool cabinet or good if you like to tinker with this old stuff. we have lots of stuff to clean out of this house and are just trying to make a few dollars instead of throwing everything away. just make me an offer as I want to get it out of here.

Wonder if it found good home or if it's still for sale ?

Can't be a CT-100 if it says "Color" on the front. Doubt it says "Color TV" as they are describing. If it does say "Color" (at the bottom of the safety glass) it would have to be a CTC-5 or later. Still would be a very worthwhile find. Good luck in trying to reach them.

Didnt a very small number of CT-100s have a color badge on the wood cabinet just under the screen???

Don't think so, not that I'm aware. CT-100s had a typical-looking RCA Victor pencil box with no color badging. The only place the word color was seen was when you opened up the pencil box and saw the color control label in small print. Color badges appeared with the CTC-5 series.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some very proud owner of a CT-100 in the 50s, added a "color" badge. Think about how many people with turbocharged cars add a "TURBO" badge that doesn't belong there... Or this CT-100 (if really a CT-100), was in some sort of a display and was labeled.

The only reason that nobody in the posts above has said they called, is because they're all going to :) .

Was there ever another RCA color with a model number that even remotely resembled CT-100. I don't remember one.

bgadow 09-19-2008 10:18 PM

I haven't had the pleasure to be around the back of a CT-100; is that how it was listed on the back cover? Sure sounds like an informed prankster to me, trying to see if we are awake!

zenithfan1 09-19-2008 10:29 PM

IIRC, the model tag is at the top of the cabinet on the edge above the back cover, dark gold in color with a black outline and read RCA Victor Color Television Model CT-100 and I think the serial number is there too. I might be wrong, it's been a few months since I could stare intensely at a CT-100. I REALLY want one......{drooling like Homer Simpson}

It makes me wonder, what kind of person would make a prank ad that only 1 in a million would even recognize as valuable? I think telling a knock knock joke in Latin would reach a larger population.
If this Ad is a sham, I would bet the perpetrator was a friend or "frenemy" of someone in Chicago trying to pull a fast one on someone local.

Its got to be a scam. I responded to that shortly after it was posted, didnt hear anything. I asked two more times and nothing. I agree with previous statement. Most people have no idea about brand names of their TV. Who would go through the effort of a model number and actually say its a "color" TV. Ive yet to see that on craigslist. Most people just say heres and old TV and almost always have a picture to prove it. Its up to you to figure out what it is.

I'm not sure how some of these scams work, but not all of them on c-list involve white van speakers or a two-year-old car for $3500.

Last year I listed a station wagon on c-list for $1500. Nothing special or valuable, an '81 Catalina Safari. About 2 weeks later I got a call from someone in Tacoma, Washington wanting to come drive the car. I'm in New Orleans! Someone copied my ad, removed most of my description, and added their e-mail but forgot to remove my phone number and posted it on a c-list up there. Glad I didn't get more phone calls.

Anything to steal a buck...

zenithfan1 09-20-2008 11:06 AM

Yep, I think there are more scammers on C-list than anywhere else. I've come across some very untrustworthy and weird things on there.

mr_fixer 09-20-2008 01:15 PM

I'm thinking if they are money scammers, that the type of reply you email them might determine whether or not they will respond to your email. If you respond to their ad with a "I'll give a $1000 right now, where do i send the money order or bank draft" they will respond with a post office box number. If you reply with a "can you give me more info, where can i see it in person." they just won't reply.
That's is only way i can think of it would be profitable to run a fake ad. It could a good test for someone else who hasn't replied to either the CT-100 or the Philco color in Atlanta to send a email to these ads immediately offering them more than $1000, If you get a reply then it is a sure bet it is a scam. just my 2cents, Logan
