Disposal of weak c.r.t.???
I have a weak 21ZP4B that I pulled from my '56 Philco that is taking up much needed space. Years ago I just tossed the old junk but these days I'm not sure what really is junk and what could be of some use to someone. I guess the only practical use of this would be if someone had a set with a shattered tube and could use a rebuildable replacement, but being a mid '50's tube I doubt I am going to find anyone looking for one, much less wanting to sink the $$ into a rebuild.
Just looking for "junk" confirmation I guess.. Thanks |
Circulate it around to the boards and see if theres any interest and if not then dispose of it. I know if i needed it i would ask but luckily i have a couple of these already in sets that test good. Like you said, someone may be in need of a rebuildable dud. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Frankly I'm scared to even mention trying to get rid of anything on this site at least since they took away the free classifieds. Last time I tried to GIVE something away I was pounced on by an administrator big time.
Admittedly at first I had posted two items that I was trying to move, and not necessarily for free, under two different topics as I could no longer find the free classified section that I used to use regularly. So I put the items under their respective topics. Very quickly the posts were deleted and I was made aware of the new pay ads that must be used for anything "for sale" and slapped on the hand. Later I posted my 1958 Zenith Space Command in the regular "early b&w" forum with HEAVY emphasis on FREE and the fact that I was just looking for a good home for the set. I was then banned from this site for a month or two. Since then I have been afraid to even mention things that I want to let go of. I have never liked the feeling that this situation gives to a site that otherwise is wonderful, and I sometimes get a bit frayed when I see the posts of things people find on ebay or craigslist that are FOR SALE which creates a double ad for an unknown seller who is not even part of Audiokarma, and here I am afraid to GIVE items away for the sake of preservation. So, you have a few 21ZP4's already..HMMM? Are they in mid 50's Philco sets perhaps? I am looking for a back cover for a 56 21" table model... |
You might want to try posting to ARF on the tube since it has a healthy tv forum also.
One of the tv's is indeed a Philco but a floor model and the other is in a Silvertone floor model that was converted from a metal bell crt to a 21ZP4. I always get confused with the classifieds here so i post over on ARF or similar board. Not too many of the tv guys participate in the tv classifieds here unless its a wanted part for which is free. I was smacked on the hand too as i wasnt familiar with the rules after the classified section was overhauled a couple years ago. To keep out of trouble i just stayed away from them since then which is no biggie and just participate in the regular discussions. -Tony |

It's unfortunate that the TV classifieds here are rather hidden and the traffic count seems to be very low. I don't think I've ever been able to move anything (for free or otherwise) by posting it there. I agree, ETF and ARF are good ways to go. That crt is not especially rare but someone may indeed be looking.
I really wish I was closer-I still have what is probably the identical set up in my attic. 21" Philco from '56, table model. I just can't bear to part it out. I'd gladly give it to you if the logistics could be worked out. |
Hey, thanks folks for the good ideas for posting goodies for sale or FREE. That will help a lot. And Bryan I feel that even if I could get your Philco that I would not want to rob parts from it either, especially if it has any hope of playing. Those sets are GREAT performers for daily use. One day perhaps I will find a back cover from a long scrapped set......

Seems a shame that the powers that be changed the classified ad policy. The classified ads used to be a vibrant and active part of this forum, and a real help to all concerned. The primary effect of the new policy has be to squash all classified ad activity. Very short sighted on their part. Pity.
I have on occasion given money to AK to support this site, and hope others will do so as well. But trying to extract money through the classified ads is just poor policy, in my opinion. Gee, hope this doesn't get ME banned! |
Hate to sound Zen, but what is the sound of a kinescope landing on a 50lb stone when hurled from the hayloft doors? I found out plenty.
Yeah, these old kines should be saved for those of us that get into antique telly resto, but at the time I wasn't on this forum--and it might not have even existed. You guys would cry at all the picture tubes I either smashed or otherwise disposed of--as I could not find a market at the time--and couldn't even give them away. :sigh: Wimmen and electronics just don't seem to mix, and it was the distaff side I had at the time that said I needed to get rid of this stuff. She was right to a degree; it would soon cost a fortune to dispose of it, and there was a free drive at the time where I could get rid of about a hundred sets without paying a dime. That was then, and this is now. If I have anything you guys need please speak up and I'll look. You can figure out how to get it shipped if it is a bigass kine.... And I don't need nuffin for it. :thmbsp: I think I may still have one unused poly roundie left. The carton is long-since rotted from round it, but the tube I think is still there in the barn. Not sure how many wishes I can make come true at this point; I threw a heckuva lot of stuff away.... :( |
