Rogers Majestic Radio at the antique show ;^)

Picked up this Rogers Majestic radio at a local antique show for $20. Not in bad condition cosmetically.

It was originally a battery unit I believe but has a converter which you see at the bottom of the cabinet.

Looks good with the rest of my antique furniture. Going to have to see if I can get the old girl running. Needs a new tuner string. I'll likely do a recap first as well.

Have to see if the chassis is live on this one.

Will have to track a schematic down as well.

Here is the schematic again, hope you can open it this way.

This is a battery operated radio, using two different batteries,
so the question of it being a live chassis is not applicable.
The batteries do not share a common ground, so you must make
sure the battery eliminator you use is compatible with this fact.

I was wondering about that. I've got a tingle from both AC and DC sources :D

It will be nice to resurrect this radio.

I was wondering if Howards restore-a-finish will work on the cabinet? It's not in that bad of condition over all, just a few scuffs and scratches. The grill cloth is in fairly nice condition as well.

I'm thinking that this might be a fairly good area to live in, SW Saskatchewan, to find this type of radio. I'm going to have to check out some auctions for sure!

If you have never worked on a tube type battery radio before, you will find several
interesting features: there is no power supply hum at all, and also the tubes heat
up to full operating temperature in less than a second (and the cathodes do not
emit any visible light). This is not a very hot shortwave receiver, but with a
good antenna you can hear several interesting things.

Take your time to study the schematic, ask questions if you are not sure.
And be careful with that B battery supply, it can shock you even at only 90 volts!

I am no expert with cabinet restoration, so I will let others offer advice. Good luck.

I have been told you can remove scratches by 'reflowing' the shellac using denatured alcohol or thinner. I have not tried this technique yet.

My own preference is to keep the cabinet as original as possible. I like the patina and to a lesser extent scratches an old radio has.
