Anybody Know What This Set Is?
 

Just spotted this on the 'Bay... Very unusual 7" console with built-in magnifier and sort-of a folded horn speaker treatment... seller does not know the brand. I have never seen anything like it.

Weird. It looks homebrew to me. Maybe a console radio cabinet with a 7" set put in?

Very unusual. I was leaning towards it being a kit until I saw the scrap of paper which is labeled "Automatic". I don't know what to think about the cabinet-notice that it has correct looking labels for the controls. I'd like to know what others think.

The TV-313 stamp must be the model number. Does anyone have a reference for that?

if its a homebrew, the maker was very talented, looks like a kit, maby a Raytheon style kit rebranded, could even be an RCA prototype.. if I had the money.... Iwonder if it uses a standard 7jp4. I would say definately factory made as this is not a typical 40s or even 50s style radio cabinet, way to square, no decoration. Wasnt there a Automatic Radio corp at one time?

If it was a radio cabinet, were did he get the Automatic decals? Also cabinet corners too square for radio cabinet. What do you think?

The gold mask around the magnifier is too large to have been from a table model Automatic. This, together with the decals, makes me think it was a factory set, though I've never seen anything like it. I have seen an Automatic 7" console, and it looks very different.

Very interesting. Both Sams and Rider indexes list an Automatic model TV-X313. Neither have a photo of the TV-X313 and the documentation in both is for model TV-709. Chassis photo of the 709 looks identical to this set's chassis. Sams also lists models TV-710 and TV-711. Console set that, as Steve mentioned, looks very different than this, except for the chassis, which looks the same.

Couple of strange things here... No "Automatic Radio" decal in the normal position under the tube, or anywhere else that I can see... The tag under the chassis stamped number was cut in half BEFORE it was applied... no real tube chart. Could there have been a deliberate attempt on the part of the mfg. to disguise the set for some reason? Perhaps the "X" in the model number stood for "experimental", and the concept was dropped before many were made? :scratch2:

It's in my neck of the woods, but $300 is a bit much to satisfy my curiosity :scratch2:

The chassis is a Tele-Tone like the one used in the model 149, their chassis were used in a lot of off brand sets like Firestone for example. (Easy to spot by the knob layout)

The tag may have been cut off because it would have said Tele-Tone or had a different model number?

I forgot about this one, it went for $627.00!
