NBC Peacock gets plucked

The old bird may be around for a while. But if Comcast has its way, things will change.

Wonder if the new public logo would become "NBComcast". :scratch2:

According to an article this morning in my local newspaper, the Comcast-NBC merger became final as of late Friday, January 21, 2011; however, this coming Tuesday, February 1, will be when Comcast officially assumes control of NBC. The new NBC logo does away with the peacock and the space between "NBC" and "Universal", to form the new name of the combined corporation: NBCUniversal. This merger is said to result in one of the largest if not the largest media conglomerates in the US, if not the world, as Comcast will have majority stakes in NBC's cable channels and theme parks as well as the NBC television network itself.

The new logo will be for corporate ID only, for now. "NBCUniversal."In white block letters on a blue background. Very simple. The Peacock will remain for the NBC broadcast divisions. Knowing Comcast's business practices, IMO, the NBC and Universal logos will not be around for long. I believe even the NBC name may disappear over time.

Thats really a shame, just another example of modern day short sighted stupidity.

That old peacock sure was neat though.

Maybe they'll use a pic of "little" Brian Roberts with a feather duster sticking out from where the sun don't shine. :scratch2:

Frankly, I can't wait to see how this entire fiasco shakes out. NBC is already the lowest-rated network, and Jeff Zucker finally got his long-deserved pink slip. There were rumors that Saturday prime time programming would be eliminated, leaving affilates to scramble to fill the time, most likely with infomercials or syndicated stuff.

NBC: Nothing But Crap

I just finished re-reading the book Up the Tube which tells the story of Fred Silverman, the guy who became head programmer at CBS, then ABC, then finally head of NBC in the late 70s/early 80s. Lots of deja vu! I'd say the folks at the top now haven't read the book.

What an ending for a once great network....

Through most of the 1970's, NBC had stopped using the peacock, and the network was at the bottom of the ratings as ABC soared with all of its "Charlie's Angels" and "Happy Days"-type garbage. NBC paid thousands of dollars to have a new logo designed, a stylish two-color "N", and they found out it infringed on a Nebraska TV station that had nearly the same logo (for $68!). Finally, NBC went back to the (redesigned) peacock, made a big deal out of it, and dominated ratings through the 1980's and beyond.
