It's obviously a homebrew set, built in the oldest tube style, very early twenties. The builder must have built in two steps: the radio first, then later on built an amplifier so made a new cabinet to contain them both. The use of external terminals on both the receiver and amplifier and connecting them together with brass strap jumpers is an early twenties way of doing things. This was done so a person could have a headset radio first and save up to get the amplifer for a horn. By a year or two later audio amplifiers would be built into sets without the external jumpers. I see an ST type tube in the amp so someone was using this at least into the thirties or tried later to rehab it.

There is no Riders on this, it's a homebrew! Most wiring in those days was bare bus bar, often square in cross section. The circuits are very simple, however, with few components other than the essentials, so should be easy to trace out and draw a schematic. The audio amplifier has two tubes with a filament rheostat for each. There are three phone jacks which probably work like this: The first one on the left is for the output of the radio with no further amplification. The middle one uses one amp tube. The one on the right uses both amp tubes. Often these jacks are arranged with switch points that turn on or off the appropriate filaments. The amplifier is going to be similar to the "senior amplifier" by RCA on the attached: once this opens click on the "eyeball" to go to the schematic.

Here's some pics of set. The set is unrefined but rather complicated for a homebrew set. If this is a homebrew set, the guy must of been a genius, complicated for an early set. Tuner has two variometers, a coil with 14 taps, and finally a tuning cap, coil tank circuit. Tuner also has small knife swith to change selectivity? The whole thing has a very early radio feel, parts move coursely, NO homemade parts/coils. I have a AK 20 big box, IT is more refined inoperation of parts, performance , etc( which is 1924). Tuner works well w/ small antenna. Large antenna not tried yet. Holes for indicators of tube operation. Rheostats are paqett? I think, small lettering. Freshman caps--federal headphone jacks for amplifier. rheostats have brass back plate saying so and off position. Lots of thing to adjust to get one station right!

wrote down a picture chart for postion of all adjustments in tuner section to pick up my favorite news station. Yes, I got it, been looking for a early battery set.

Glad you are having fun with it. In those days there were scads of circuits published and radio guys read it all avidly and compared notes. It would appear that the fellow who built this aimed on incorporating just about every method of tuning possible, all of it funneling down that long box to the lonely detector tube at the end! I suspect with two variometers that one of them is the regeneration control. It would be good to take your time and sketch out the schematic of it. I wouldn't change anything though because it's a great example frozen in time of what guys were building then.

Thanks for info all. Those tubes holes to show filaments were popular in 1921 to 1922 or 23 maybe years for radio makers. I have had a homemade set, The owner actualy made coil which worked well and was crude. ALL parts on radio are factory made, well laid out and thought of. Very complex setup, cabinet is simple, but factory quality. All wiring done to a certain standard. I have not seen a homebrew set done yet to factory standards.

Unrelated I have recently seen another unmarked radio that seller assumes is a certain make because of audio xfmrs, AND is correct. The tuning caps were made by that maker specifically, One of my first antique radios was this make and is rare.

related is the fact this set has similair type construction and is unmarked too. Some early radios simply were not marked. 1920 to 1921?

I'm just going to realize the generation of collector that knew this set has passed already since set is old. There's only a few old radio collecting books, most have limited pictures for reference.

Thanks for wiring info! RCA schematic will work. Once amp is oprerational, will restore wires to bare bus to match rest of the set. that ST tube is mine fro an AK loner set, used til 2012! I used this tube to demonstrate filaments seen thru cabinet by holes. The ST tube is more clear, less getter used. I will resraech and get some cool vintage tubes that display filaments well.

The tube anp part is wired right, My A supply may need new regulator, it shuts down w/ more than one tube.

ONE xfmer tests bad w/ meter.

CAN someone tell me the ratio to resistance couple to replace transformer? Isn't it a ratio of 10/1?

I did this years ago and read, can't quite remember, finding an exact replacement is near impossible. Can someone suggest a ratio for first audio?

Can someone date Pacent rheostats
 

Can someone please date Pacent rheostats pictured w/ set. these controls are original w/ matching cabinetg plate, does someone know approximatre years made? Most rheos don't have lable plate.

Pacent was founded in 1919 so your 'stats are probably from the early twenties. I've seen pix of other Pacents with the knob and dial plate like yours.
