'49 Admiral table model radio/phono combo

Here's a '49 Admiral Bakelite AM radio/3-speed record player that I recently picked up. Being from '49, this would be one of the earliest 3-speed models. I think Admiral made an earlier 78-only model that used the same cabinet.

I remember that changer as being only a two speed. 33 and 78.

Hmm. I've got something similar but maybe only one speed?

I double checked and mine is 3-speed. Mine even has the three cutouts around the center spindle for the automatic 45 rpm record adapter.

Did yours come with the adapter?

These are pretty cool looking units. Performance wise I have no idea as I never really ever plugged mine in.

One thing is for sure. For maximum display effectiveness, these things need to be cleaned and buffed up. Anybody have some tips for a reliable way to clean and polish up bakelite? I never seem to have very good luck...:sigh:

I'd like to know that myself. As can be seen, mine is very dirty and dull.

Mine didn't come with the 45 adapter; but, I have an adapter that came with my '49 TV/radio/phono combo that I can "borrow" until one comes along.

I may have to start a thread on that one. I have a few bakelite tabletop radios that could use help too. I try polishing them up but they seem to not respond well.

What does that adapter look like ?

I think this is it. Unfortunately, It's a little on the expensive side. I will, of course, try to find a used one before I shell out $50 for a new one.

I've got a two speed model(78 and 33). I think mine has a bad pickup; any leads on replacement cartridges for this thing?
