Aftermarket mask crt cover
 

I posted this on another site so some of you have already seen this but was wondering if any one here might have some additional information about these. This is a Tele Tone tv I am considering buying. It appears to be a TV-209 with an aftermarket mask on it. Has anyone seen a mask like this? Any other opinions on it? Thanks.

I dissent with the ARF posters who said it's aftermarket. I think it's just a rarer variant of an already rare model. I remember when the first one of these porthole Teletones turned up not very long ago and the universal sentiment was "gee, I've never seen one of those before." Not every TV model that was sold had an illustration of itself saved for posterity.

It would be interesting to remove that mask and see if the porthole mask is behind it.

Is the Tele-tone name on the cabinet, or just on the tubes?

If not on the cabinet itself, I suspect that this is a custom cabinet TV that Tele-tone made for someone else.

Tele-tone made sets for Crosley, Firestone, Silvertone, Sentinel, Delco and a huge bunch of store brands. Usually they took a stock chassis and just tweaked up the cabinet for each brand.

The Tele Tone name is on the TV. I plan on picking it up next week and then can take a closer look at it.

If the price is reasonable I would definitely get it.
It uses a modified 721TS chassis, not exactly the same but close and it's a good performing set.

Does $75 seem reasonable?

It seems very reasonable to me for that rare model Porthole, even if it's been modified, of course I realize from your post at ARF that you got the set! :yes:

I'm surprised no one mentioned that these magnifying masks were sold in the '60s to make any small screen into a big screen.

That particular mask is just a flat piece, not one of the magnifying lenses.

OOPS. It sure fooled me. Perhaps it was a substitute for a Winky Dink Magic Screen. Any evidence of crayon marks?

I used to draw directly on the CRT face when I watched WD back in the late 60's, it was glass so it cleaned off easily.
