Need help identifying this B/W GE
1 Attachment(s)
My brother just picked up this B/W GE in Western Mass. He turned it on just long enought to see if it works and it does. Won't turn it on again until its restored but at least he knows that the major components are good. The cabinet is in absolutely perfect condition. What a find!
He asked me what year it is but I'm not sure. Anyone had a set like it? He says it has three speakers. From what I can see it's a UHF VHF set. but more than that I don't know. Thanks |
Probably 1958 or 59, I think it's one of the Slimline sets and is probably very similar to Bob's GE internally.

He did tell me it was a 21". Not that he would sacrafice it for that i'm sure. |
Sort of. They use 21DEP4 or 21ESP4 which have a longer neck than the Predicta CRTs.
|
I'm quite sure that 1958 is correct. Not the least bit surprised it still works either.
|
Yep, my GE was working fairly well on all original components (except for the tubes).
|
My folks had a similar GE in a table model with the pushbutton Power Tuning bought in '58.
|
Seems like were narrowing in on it at 1958. My brother said he has the push buttons too with the hardwired remote. I'll have the model number a little later.
Is it ok to use this set as is or should it be recapped first? |

My brother finally turned the set on. Here's a pic. He says the sound is deafining. I'm not sure if that means there's a bad cap or he just had the volume turned up to high. He's calling it a GE Ultra View 24.

Thanks for the reminder Dave, I only asked because it is a late 50s set and I know that there were great improvements made in cap design since the 40s. I think the picture speaks for itself. But I'm with you, It should be restored before any serious use.
|
I think that's one of the GE's that has a HUGE oval speaker on the bottom baffle board.
|
We'll be lucky to get any really detailed shots of the insides since my brother isn't really into any kind of restoration. He likes his collection to be completely as found.
To each his own. |
