CBS and RCA Color Status 1950-51
 

I found these articles while looking through some old service notes and thought they might be of interest. The CBS article dates from October 1950 and the RCA from January 1951. Note the use of a 16AP4 shell for construction of the color CRT. Was this the basis of the 15GP22 or was that a different design altogether? I’m not new at this but don’t know the CRT history like many of you. Thankfully the information source is still alive and well here.

A quick search says the 16AP4 was a metal cone tube, so not the basis for the 15GP22 (glass cone).

This is before the all glass tube was envisaged, they are talking developmental tubes with metal shells like the C-73547 and C-73293.

It's not technically accurate to say they were built into a 'standard' 16AP4 shell either, it would be more descriptive to say that they were 'based' on a 16AP4 shell since a 16AP4 lacks the welded rim them color tubes had. This was necessary, due to stuffing the phosphor dot plate and shadow mask inside the front half of the tube. The color ones also had much larger and longer neck glass to accommodate the 3 gun structures, so the aft section of the tube was altered from it's B&W counterpart as well.

The first known/reported all-glass RCA color CRT was the C-73599, which, if you can still find one today under vacuum, can be a direct replacement for the 15GP22.

I followed that thread, while the tube was still good. I REALLY wanted to see that set actually WORK---and with that tube. I am not sure what all was said last year about it at the ETF, as I got sick, nearly died and had to be taken to a hospital close to there. But THIS year--I plan to go.

Anyway---WHAT caused that tube to die that way ? You DID get a raster on it, and it showed promise....for awhile. I know you babied it...but it still died. WHY ?

as "spontaneous", that is, nobody bumped it.
