rca projection set
 

A friend is helping me with my rca 9 pc 41 -1949 projection set. He is cleaning up the rust and painting the chassis's while I do the rest.
Well today we got to looking at the concave mirror.....zero tarnish...shiny as all get out... and the coating silver is missing on a lot of it!
Does any one have a source for resilvering? there is no one in Lima, Ohio or any reasonably close larger city that I can find to re silver it.

Look for an astronomy club - you may find someone who does telescope mirrors and can help on this.

Look up Spectrum Coatings. I forget where they are located, but they did a nice job on the spherical mirror for my Philco 48-2500 projection set.

Nova Optics has done coatings for me in the past and has done a quality job.

Might be a treasure trove of parts, and the chasses look really clean.

I'd check with a nearby glass shop as most of them cut glass as well as make mirrors for specific sizes. Although you are in Lima, Dayton is a major area and there should be a few shops around.

Keep in mind these are special front surface mirrors where the reflective coating is on top of the glass. Not something your typical glass shop would have.

I have used H.L. CLAUSING in Skokie, IL for several mirror in the past.
I will use others in the future.

My mirror is not tarnished...at all. just losing small sections of the coating.
I got a hold of a resilvering shop and the gentleman stated that silver uncoated tarnishes very fast and maybe it is not silver ...but something else.
can someone with one of these sets chime in on it?
Is it actually silver and maybe some protective coating was applied?
So when I get time I will send him pictures of the mirror and get a ball park idea of the cost to re coat it.

While it is called resilvering, it is actually aluminum, which is evaporated onto the surface of the mirror by heating an aluminum pellet in a vacuum chamber, much the way CRTs are aluminized.

I have also used Clausing some years ago, but found Spectrum Coating to be less expensive.
