This has been on the way back burner for a while. So after getting the

Emerson 1232 up and running, I figured its time to try my hand on this one.

Contrary to what I had read it is not all that bad to service, thanks for the

nudge dtvmcdonald.

After replacing the electrolytic caps & brief variac power up. I was greeted with

a dim, shrunken, blurry video and distorted audio. Along with a whiff of smoke.

Time to chill for the night & review service info.

IIRC , there are power resistors where the power cord comes in and change the selenium rectifier that maybe what you smell or might be your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion Timmy, however sometime in the past the selenium
was replaced with a pair of silicon.

Yes ! MM the pixies took flight.

Starting with the basics I quickly checked the B+ and voltages were spot on.

Next I have been changing caps in the usually suspect sweep sections.

Running low on parts stash so need to reorder.

If you don't have enough to completely recap it yet in addition to the sweep caps prioritize caps with bubbled wax on the tube or melted ends.

Problem is most of them are ! :D

Well I couldn't stand the suspense any longer. So as they say "fire it up" and

what do you know, IT WORKS :banana: Not perfect and more caps need to be

changed, but it is watchable. I am a firm believer fresh caps do make a difference.

I have a 17" RCA Portable TV from around 1960 or so that was given to me and it didn't power up when I first got it, turned out to be a bad thermistor in the power supply circuit, bypassed the thermistor and the TV powered right up and the TV worked as it sat with all of the original parts and tubes in place yet, the only problem I had was that the vertical is slightly jumpy but I attribute that to the fact that there are 6 paper caps in the TV (4 of them in the vertical circuit) that need changing out, but its kind of hard to get to them as the vertical circuit board is soldered to the chassis.
