This will definitely work. If you do it at 20 frames per second you'll need a wheel with either 3 color segmants or 6. With 3 the wheel has to spin at 1200 RPM, but with 6 just 600. You will be stunned with how good the color is. For color filters try Roscolux lighting gel #25 orange-red, #76 blue-green and #90 dark green.
You can tape the filters to a clear piece of plastic from a poster frame.
