Neither the VCR nor the DVD PLAYER create the macrovision signal, but rather the signal comes from the VHS TAPES AND THE DVD DISCS THEMSELVES. There are obviously some VCRs and DVD players that are made to not let the macrovision get to your set, but finding one of those models is a significant PITA.

There were sooo many different macrovision removers made that odds are that there was a model with a built in RF modulator. That would only increase your box count by one and add just a pinch more wiring.

I don't see what the big deal is with having it all in one. By the time you track down a VCR or DVD player that has a built in MV remover you likely will have gone to several times as much effort as just getting a remover and a modulator(if you never watch video tape and only are using the VCR as an RF modulator then you don't need another RF modulator).

If you are worried about wiring complexity, don't be! Just remember if you want one device to feed a signal to another then just connect the output of the sending device to the input of the receiving device. With one each: TV,VCR,DVD player,MV remover,RF modulator your scheme would have less than half the components of my video system alone(and that is not counting the massive audio system that is interconnected with it!) and only a tiny fraction of the cabling that my monstrosity needs to do what it does. I end up totally rewiring and reorganizing my system at least annually(either organization, buggy equipment, or adding new stuff) with many smaller rewires in between, and I rarely mess up with the practice I impose on my self. When I mess up it can take hours to sort out (and possibly require more equip and cables to facilitate said debuging), but your scheme(using a separate MV remover and modulator ) I could wire and debug(assuming good equip and cables) in less than 10 minutes.
