According to Wiki, Channel 3 was the first channel (9-1-1941) in the area. The estimated 100 mile range was limited only by the antenna height you wanted to attempt in those days. The remainder of the VHF channels available in eastern PA did not come along until 1947-49.
KYW was the very last analog signal in this area and was finally turnt off long after 6-12-2009.
How KYW was chosen for a station East of the Mississippi has always been a mystery. Same goes for KDKA in Pittsburgh. There is a WBAP-AM and WFAA-TV in Ft Worth TX, also a mystery.
