How long it will last depends on the amount of gunk that was on the cathode and what caused it to begin with. If the tube was sitting for decades not used, chances are good that you'll be able to whack it back to life and it will stay that way. Most times elevated filament voltage alone will boil off any deposits, and it will give good readings. If on the other hand the cathodes are just plain wore out from use, you might only get a temporary bump in emission before it goes back into the red. Only thing that will fix it at that point is a brightener (maybe) or a new gun.
