Just make sure the PIV rating is high enough for use in the set, PIV being the maximum reverse voltage applied to the diode. The top hat ones in my CTC-4 are rated 600 PIV, more than enough for the service they are in. I have seen people use general purpose diodes in the doubler circuit on sets, but it makes me nervous.
