I think it depended on the brand. I know G.E. had the darker around the edges with the lighter as you move in. I have a G.E. Americana fridge and stove in coppertone brown that has that as well. I do know of other brands that had just the solid color.

The kitchen I have pink appliances. The walls are a soft yellow. Laundry room is turquoise appliances and walls are the same soft yellow. I have an outdoor kitchen with the coppertone brown fridge and stove, turquoise metal cabinets, and a little pink thrown in there. The remainder of the appliances are in a secondary laundry room(has 4 washer hookups and 4 dryer hookups.
