Wood veneer can vary greatly even within species. Because he intends to refinish the cabinet, I would strip the cabinet first. Then take it to a high end furniture refinisher where they would have lots of various veneers in stock. Best way is to try and match with actual samples. Otherwise you may end up purchasing many pieces of veneer to get a match even if you are sure what species of wood RCA originally used. In the past I have re-veneered the entire outside of a small table top set. That way you never have to worry that the patch isn't a perfect match.
