Depending on where you live it can be easy to become a VCR snob. About 15 years ago the part of Florida I lived in saw so few decks come up second hand that if you needed one you took any working crap you could find and tried to keep it alive. Then I moved where I live now and for a few years about 5 years ago every thrift on any given day would have 20-60 decks on the shelf with stock changing constantly...Under those conditions, you start to skim the cream (S-VHS decks, top loaders and Betamax). I think I've kept my little collection of VHS machines under 30 which doesn't steal too much room from vacuum-tube gear that is more my speed.
