I've used Ronson lighter fluid for glazed pinch rollers for over 25 years and have yet to find anything better. Soak a folded square of paper towel with it and turn the roller with your fingers. It cleans far superior to Alcohol and doesn't leave a residue.

I seriously doubt that this issue is due to glaze and seems more like an alignment issue between the capstan and the roller. Some machines I've ran into have had very hard pinch rollers and have played without issue.

Check that the roller is not sitting off on a angle and is running square with the capstan. Cover the IR sensors and examine it without a tape I had one that was bent a bit by someone yanking a tape out after it was ate. That machine was doing EXACTLY what yours is doing. Also look for evidence of anyone playing with the alignment. Someone could have been in there turning screws. A offset audio head will also cause problems like this.
