Hotpoint 17S306

I bought this Hotpoint 17S306 at a radio swap meet last weekend. It's very clean and the innards look to be unmolested - most everything is date coded April 1958. Sadly, the 17BRP4 CRT has an open filament.

Does anyone know if any other tubes sub for the 17BRP4 and 17CKP4? They don't seem to be a CRT that's easily found.

Wow, that is nice. Too bad about the tube. I have a set that's a junker, I'll check to see what tube is in it. It's an RCA of the same size.

I love these type sets from the late 50's. Looks like you found a nice example!

I have a similar GE branded set, it had a bad CRT also, I was able to locate a new one for it.

There's a beater set on eBay now $35, i'd be skeptical about the CRT in it since it looks very used.

Edit, the eBay set seems to be a 14" model?

I'm swapping the CRT in this set this evening (thanks Don), and have a question:

GE used a fabric tape to insulate the CRT bracket from the glass. Is it important what type of tape I use on the new CRT?

Try using this product. It is called cambric tape. Comes in both adhesive and non-adhesive versions. I recommend the version without adhesive. Very tough insulating tape used by electricians.

Here is alink that shows what it is. You can buy it at any wholsale electrical supply house.

Before firing it up I'd check to make sure there's not a short in the heater string that caused that tube to go open.

If it's a series string and it gets shorted half way through it's going to put a lot of extra volts on the remaining tubes.

I'm not firing it up until I recap it - I just wanted the new tube in the set and out of the way.

Since the nearest electrical supply is a good 45 minutes through traffic, I think I'm just going to put the old tape under the bracket. The adhesive is gone but it came off in one piece. But I will pick up some cambric tape next time I go out that way for future swaps.

Thanks guys.

Cambric tape- Yeah, I'd forgot about that. It WOULD be better than "Duck Tape"....

Yeah that Duck Tape is good for some things but it tends to squirm around when used for this purpose, plus it looks sooo tacky.
