New York prices for New York people. Either that or the person doesn't really want to sell it. One of the letdowns of E-pay.

Well at least it's a Buy It Now/Best Offer.

My fav is this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/GENERAL-ELECTRIC...item53ddafbfcc

I found one at a yard sale for $10 (paid too much) and it worked. I have a thread floating around here about it. Had the nasty grungy crud all over the innards. With the big box and speaker it's a nice sounding unit though.

That big console, I think $125 would be an EXCELLENT price for it...For the seller. If I was buying, $75 would be about whhat I'd be willing to go...

"Given to me by my Grandfather in 1977". There's your reason for the high price. This guy is trying to sell sentimental value, which I see quite often. It's like the idiot that was trying to sell an early '60's tube type Curtis-Mathes console stereo on CL for $2500. I clued him in on the facts of life, telling him he'd be lucky to get $25. He thanked me; but, said it had too much sentimental value to his Dad to sell it that cheap. I don't care that you have fond memories of Grannie listening to Guy Lombardo records on it or listening to your Firestone Christmas album during the holidays. I'm not buying memories and if it means that much to the seller, they should keep it.

Says it must be rare because he hasn't found anything about it in 10 years of searching.

Well, sweatyk found one in this thread
http://www.videokarma.org/showthread.php?p=2959304

banderson found a photo and I pointed out where the schematic can be found.

What I find puzzling is that he owned a TV shop, yet he had to have someone else fix it for him.

I wouldn't criticize him for the asking price though. I would never pay that for it, but he's free to ask what he wants.

I wonder if sweatyk ever decided to take the one his friend found? The price was right.

John

Thing is, every old radio we see has been owned by someone's grandfather or grandmother, and such. So unless you knew that person, the sentimental value is not significant.

Old console radios like that show up near me from time to time, and they're usually in the $25-$40 price range. I have two Silvertones ( a R101 from 1940 and a entry level console from '38) and I paid $25 for BOTH. In fact, I got a Atwater Kent Model 53C for free last summer.

I like when the ad states "only SERIOUS offers please." When you offer ten or fifteen dollars the sellers get beside themselves.

The following took place a few days ago over a late-70's off-brand console stereo (Catalina or Lloyd's)

Seller: You don't seriously think I'd let an *antique* stereo go for only five dollars.
Me: Well, the changer is stuck and one channel is out.
S: But the cabinet is worth more than that.
M: It's particle board and has water damage on top.
S: It could be easily refinished.
M: How do you refinish a vinyl decal?
S: Look, my father paid over $390 for this stereo - the receipt is right here.
M: Well, what are you looking to get for it?
S: At least a hundred dollars - the wood cabinet is worth that.
M: Well, I have heard that particle board was back in style. I would emphasize that in your ad. Good luck, lady.

I like the G.E. clock radio that rollei35guy posted: "sounds kinda tinny...." Even more reason to pay $250 for a $15 radio.

I've been in this situation a few times. In my case, it's usually folks that think their broken '80's particleboard/plastic console TV's are worth a fortune because of the "fine cabinet". I remember one woman thought I'd give her a ton of money for such a set, even after her kid shot the CRT face with a BB gun. She really had it in her head that someone would give her a good price just for the "fine cabinet". About six months later, she called and was begging me to come haul the set off. I stuck a used CRT in it and sold it.

I also remember going to a yard sale where a woman had a cheap '70's Soundesign console stereo in her hot storage building. She was determined to get $50 for it. It was not plugged in; but, I could tell the plastic BSR changer was frozen. When I brought that to her attention, she said "it has to be plugged in and turned on to spin". I tried to explain to her that the changer platter should spin freely by hand. I just finally left it alone. No sense in trying to reason with a know it all idiot. What I should have done was said something like, "OK, plug it in. If everything on this stereo properly works, I'll give you twice the amount you want for it".

Mine is a very nice sounding radio (after a couple new caps and chasing down some bad solder joints). A nice sounding $15 radio.

So I'll see your writing desk/fake piano/record player and raise you a Voice Of Music writing desk/am-fm stereo/record player

I found one of these in a thrift. It's staring at me right now.
