50s Sylvania console on ebay question

So I'm browsing ebay and run upon this 50s Sylvania console in excellent cosmetic shape and thought about making an offer to see if he would bite but wait there's a problem. The HV lead is not hooked up to the picture tube and the cover (for the Hv compartment?) is hanging off the lead. And the plate cap is off the HO tube. And what's going on with the oil filled cap taped to the side of the cabinet?

so I thought I would ask the experts on here what they thought about it.

Don't think it's an oil cap, I think it's just an FP-style capacitor. It does look very nice, but I don't think $170 is fair. I'd offer $120 max, see if he takes.

Yeah, I think it's just a really crude repair for one of the electrolytics. Looks like the HV circuitry with it's two little HV rectifier tubes is intact.

I think the price is a little high as well. Especially if the CRT is bad or weak. Cabinet is in great shape though.

Just curious, is there a reason that particular set caught your eye?

I was looking for a 50s console for a friend that wants one. Plus it would require very little in cabinet work if any at all. It's within reasonable driving distance. No I would not pay the price he's asking.

If I get it and the crt is bad how hard would it be to find? Since it's ebay if he accepts a lower offer I think I would be stuck with it bad crt or not. I'm kinda worried something serious is wrong because why would the HV lead and HO plate cap be disconnected? Bad crt, flyback etc.

Maybe they meant to replace the CRT, but in the end decided against it?

Nice looking set but certainly not worth half that amount. You don't know the condition of the CRT. But remember that value is determined by the one paying the money so you may want it.

BTW, that set has been for sale before. I remember seeing that masking tape capacitor thing before...

I don't know about things in MD, but here in WA people can hardly give away humdrum 1950s B/W consoles like that. If you watch craigslist for a while, you may find something in better shape at a much lower price.

The caveman "repair" does not inspire confidence. For all you know, the set has a smoked power transformer or dead CRT and someone gave up on it when the first fix-it attempt didn't work.

Just my $0.02.

I see a quite similar Sylvania in Beitman's 1952 Most needed TV book. Page 177. Digital copies exist on various places on the 'net. I see a few strange things, like the power supply has a -135V and another supply at +125V. Some circuits like the vertical and horiz use both, ie, their cathodes draw electrons from the -135V supply and the plates draw current from the +125V (remember, current flow is in the opposite direction of the flow of electrons, blame Ben Franklin for getting it backwards). Some low power circuits draw only from one or the other. And become effectively in series. So some of those electrolytic cap outside cans may be at some high voltage compared to the chassis, maybe even that hack masking tape one. I see an added electrolytic cap as well.

If you need the service info I can scan it for you. But not right away.

The power supply section is indeed strange. It looks like they kept the overall design of their earliest set and made minimal changes. Instead of using selenium rectifiers to make a separate negative supply they took the high and low sides of the floating 260V supply and put a voltage divider across it tying one point to chassis ground. The ground return will be fairly high impedance, but anything that uses both +/- as described by wa2ise will see a normal impedance.

If you get it and need a flyback I have a RAM replacement for it that you can have.

I have decided to wait and pass on it.for 1 thing his price was too high.Besides even if he accepted an offer for half which is what I was thinking about because it's ebay and not craigslist I would be obligated to buy it bad crt or not.

The 2nd thing was the "caveman" repair like you said. The 3rd thing was the disconnected plate cap and Hv wire with the cover off the HV section.Could have meant bad flyback, crt who knows.

And fourth it was an 8 hour round trip.

They don't show up as often in Md and the sellers often have high prices on them like the ebay auction. High asking prices seem to be a northeast thing Both on ebay and craigslist.I see it on jukeboxes and old radios as well. Nothing cheap around here unless you get extremely lucky and find it at a garage sale or something like that and the guy doesn't know what he has.

I've been trying to contact a local list member who gets around a lot more than I do to see if he can locate one.He doesn't get on here often.I have to work 6 days a week so that leaves out most yard, garage and estate sales for me.BTW I've never seen anything but modern tvs in the trash and this day and time probably will not.even back when I started looking for tvs to sell the oldest were late 60s tube and early 70s portables.

Saw a roundie once in front of a defunct radio repair shop in Salisbury and started to grab it and a guy came out and stopped me around 1988 or so.

I was extremely lucky on my Zenith 29JC20 roundie maybe I'll get lucky on a 50s console for my friend.
