Sony Video8 VTR
Hey guys,
Picked up a Sony EV-S7000U the other week. Was told it worked, but stuck a tape in to find out it has transport issues. Tape went in, did not try to wrap it around the heads, won't attempt to eject. I got the tape out, in pieces (it was a new blank, as I predicted this and didn't want to ruin old home movies). The new development is it thinks it has a tape...it begins to spin the head and try to rewind (or fast forward). Its been years since I worked on a VCR, anyone have any ideas?

When I worked on some of those 20 years ago we kept a stock of guide assemblies, gears and other common fail parts that would fall apart, break, strip or otherwise fail and jam the mechanism. Probably something like that wrong with it. Difficult to work on.

I've got an EV-S900 Hi8 Sony deck. It needs belts. Other than that, it runs like a dream. Previous owner bought it, transferred 6-7 camera original tapes, and put it back in the original box for 10-15 years before I bought it for $10 last summer. Has all literature, and an unused OEM remote. I like the rosewood veneer on it. Looks lots more snazzy than the other black plastic Sony stuff I have.

Practically no ideas, except - if it thinks it has tape, it could be due to a burned out lamp that is supposed to shine through the tape path on a photodetector. (That's all I recall about tape mechanisms, and it might not apply to yours)
