The remote... one button for 'loudness'? It's only one button, how do you turn the sound up AND down? Does it just flick it back and forth to a preset setting higher than the volume control or what?

I had that exact same model set last year (its a 1965), it had a remote chassis, but I didn't actually have the remote, so I don't know. Every tube in that set was bad, the electrolytics and the diodes in the power supply were bad. I finally got it to work for about 2 minutes until the flyback started melting. I finally junked the cabinet and kept the rest for parts. Some interseting facts about that set are that the radio is entirely soild state, and there are two buttons near the tuner that by pressing them the tuner goes up or down, kind of like a remote control on the set itself.

Those remotes typically had a Off-Loud-Medium-Soft-Off-etc. cycle

I have one of these remotes. Has an odd action/sound. It was described in the ad as like an air bladder & maybe thats what it is. I've never taken it apart to find out. I think I got it with a bw portable, yeah, today I would keep that set but this was too many years ago.

how it works is that there is a four pole stepper relay mounted on the remote receiver chassis. each time you click the volume button, the relay advances one pole, which has a resistor in series with the volume control. the resistors are different values. |

back then unless you had a color set, most people turned on the tv and left it on that channel during prime-time, there was no such thing as channel surfing back then, besides if someone in the family tried to turn the channel they usually got yelled at by one of the parents

I would think it would be good if you were in bed and wanted to turn the set off without getting up....better than no remote, but kind of an entry level step up feature to introduce you to that more expensive model. We have a 27" b/w Magnavox with an air operated remote at the shop and I think it has one button for channel and another for on off volume but it doesn't seem to work right.

You never saw my sister sitting in front of the set spinning that knob for hours on end from 2 to 13... over... and over... and over... took her about 1/2 hour to figure out there was nothing on worth watching! |
