New to Forum - Metz 204KW 3-D

Hello friends:

My name is Carlos and this is my first post.

I have a Metz 204KW 3-D radio in perfect condition, working fine.
I have searched the web but I have only found information about the 304 model.

Can anybody help me with some information about this radio?

1-Year of fabrication (I suppose it's the late 50s)
2-Technical specs?
3-Where can I find spares for it?
4- Although I am going to keep it, which could be its market value?

Thanks in advance

I think the late 50s is about right. I couldn't find it on the European site Radiomuseum.org, but the Metz 205 looks similar. I'm a member there, so I can get to all the content - some, like schematic diagrams, are limited to members. Is there a tube list on the back? That would help narrow it down. Tubes can be found without much trouble - except "eye' tubes - most other parts are generic. Most Euro radios go for $30-40, though the top-of-the-line models (large, usually stereo) can bring quite a bit more.

Thank you very much Tom.
I appreciate very much your answer.

This Metz belonged to my father and was given to me by my mother six months ago, before she passed away. So there is a sentimental value several million times the $40 it's priced in the market. This may be the chance to start in a very exciting hobbie.
As I told you, I want to keep it, but I was surprised to find so little information about Metz radios in the Web, compared to other brands.

Regarding your question, yes, there is a tube list in the back. The codes (from left to right) are: EM34, ECH81, EF85, EAF42 and EL41.
Additionally, it is written 7V 0,3A

I would like to ask your help once more:
This radio was used in a country with 220V AC. Now I am in a 110V country. The radio has a selector in the back (red circle, Picture 1) for setting the voltage.
There are two "brackets", apparently for fuses (picture 2). There is a thin wire welded in bracket "A" (not visible in the picture), while "B" is empty.

My questions are:
1-I think there should be a fuse in "A". What rating?
2-Why are there two brackets? If a change the voltage to 110V, should I use the fuse in "B"?

Thanks

Carlos- VERY nice set...Am glad you're gonna keep it. Not familiar w/"Metz", but it looks to be a contemporary w/my Grundig 2066, from 1959. Welcome to AK ! And yes, collecting old radios is a VERY good hobby....Next thing, you'll start to get a "love-light" in yr eyes for old TVs...Then you'll KNOW you're hooked ! <grin>-Sandy G.

I think this would need at least one more tube if it has FM - maybe 12AT7 or 6AQ8 - but I can't read the dial well enough to tell. Does it have a band marked "FM" or "UKW"?

If it doesn't have FM, it may be an export model for somewhere other than the US and Europe. It DOES have a power transformer, which is good. (The Metz 205 runs directly off-line without a transfomer - potentially dangerous).

The EM34 eye tube is listed at Antique Electronic Supply for $78 each... and they don't have any left! The others aren't hard to find or expensive if needed - and they may all be fine. I wouldn't recommend plugging it in - I don't know where you're located, but it would be good to have a tech look this over first.

You might try posting at the forum at antiqueradios.com -

Unhappy

Hi Sandy:

Thanks for your words. This radio has been at home for 50 years and I didn't even notice it, but now I'm hooked.
I really feel sad about all those antique radios I remember seeing in my relative's houses, but now they're lost .
My Metz looks a lot like those Grundigs I have seen in the web.

Bye

Hi Tom:

It doesn't have "FM" nor "UKW". I am attaching a picture of the dial.
You are right about the "export model". This one was bought in Perú (220V) by my father a few years before getting married in 1959 and now it "lives" with me in Venezuela (110V).
It actually has text written in english and french in the back

Everything works fine, but it is good to know the price of the spares, just in case. It is funny that a tube can cost more than the entire radio, but no problem...

I am a little afraid of plugging it in here even though the radio was working Ok in Perú (220V). Well, actually almost.... It is fixed in one station due to a broken string inside, but that is a minor problem.
I'm going to try to see if the fuse "problem" is a problem or not.
Thanks for the advise.

If it were MY radio, I'd go thru it & replace the wax/paper capacitors...Yr set is getting close to 50 yrs old, if its not already, & the caps will start giving trouble any time now. After that, you oughta be good to go for a looooong time !
