Shared creative space

I have moved to southern CA from Virginia near Wash DC. I have 90+ TVs still in storage in Virginia. I sold my 5 bedroom house and bought a 2 bedroom condo in Seal Beach so I will only have room for 2-3 tvs in the condo. I am now looking for creative space in the Long Beach CA area. Creative space is now becoming popular because of robotic hobbiest and people interested in making things using computer controlled fabricators. It has been popular in the past for artists (painters, sculpters etc) and musicians (practice rooms, recording studio etc.), video hobbiest and car collectors. If anyone is interested in this sort of thing give thoughts here or PM me.

Richard

ETF convention

So Richard, does this mean you will not be at the ETF convention this year?

Ken, I would like to go to ETF this year, but I have a lot going on right now. Are you going to ETF? I may fly in there then fly/drive to VA to pick up stuff. I have TVs in VA and one which I need to pick up in Pittsburg. I also may be picking some other TVs up in Mass. I've been in a hotel here in CA waiting for the condo sale to close Apr 22nd.

There's a 3 story creative space called the Torpedo factory in Alexandrea Va on the pier with separate studios owned by individual artists http://www.torpedofactory.org/open_artist_studios.htm . Some of the studios have ocean views. All the booths are zoned retail. There is a gift shop and museum on the main floor. The entire first floor can be rented after hours for partys etc. If your party wants to buy art from the booths after hours then that can be arranged. I belong to two robot meetups (www.meetup.com) where one of the robot groups
http://www.nova-labs.org/blog has creative space in Reston VA for approximately $50 month membership which includes conference room for classes etc, kitchen with a refrigerator any microwave, a bathroom, a room with a makerbot for building plastic models, a CNC 3d printer/cutter for metal, plastic, wood and storage space for individual robots (humanoid, helicopter etc). I think large cities such as LA, Wash DC, Boston, San Francisco, New York etc could support shared space by radio and TV collectors either with other members such as artists, musicians, and robot builders or independently. I did a quick check on robot groups here and I found one but unfortunately it was aimed at students 8-12 years old. They were persueing donation of funds for permanent space. I would like storage for 80 tvs and about 20 radios and a display area for about 8-10 TVS plus small desk area for a computer. It would be nice also to have a small theater with 10-12 seats and LCD TV which could dual purpose as conference room, classroom, or build teardown area. I'm currently renting both a 10X15 and a 10X20 storage unit where everything is packed to the ceiling. I really don't want to just move everything from one storage space in VA to another storage space in CA.

Username1; feel free to move this thread if you want.

This thread was meant to stir interest of what to do with your vintage TV collection when it outgrows the space in your house i.e. my 95 TVs. The idea is to continue to enjoy them and not lock them away.

Thanks, Richard

The shared-space idea is interesting, and it seems feasible for larger population areas that could have enough collectors to support it. If you are spending $200 per month on those storage rooms, that would be a good start toward a larger area shared with others.

I have used my limited space at home to help control the size of my collection.

A variation of this concept is being tried in different areas of the country.
I have a pole-shed type type building in a complex that has 66 of them.
They're all individually owned, not the land, just the building. It is a condominium type complex.

Or you can do as I am doing..........Building Bob's Bunker

I lost the 600sqft space I had in my brother's factory along with the space for my wood shop and metal shop, when he closed his factory in December of 2011. I haven't been able to pursue my TV hobby since then. So I am building a 1900sqft sup-subterranean workshop under my back yard with a 2 car, 2 story garage above. I will use the 2nd floor above my garage as a TV museum to display my restored sets, and there will be a 200 sqft storage area in the bunker.

If you go to my web site (link is below) and look in the left hand menu for the title "Bob's Bunker" you will find a story, a slide show, and a time laps video of the construction up to last December, when we had to place construction on hold due to winter setting in.

During the winter while construction outside has been on hold, I have been using the time to re-establish my wood working shop and my machine shop, below ground in the "Bunker". I am about 80% of the way to completion on those projects.

I think those of us who are "space challenged", will find this an interesting concept.

Bob, thanks for the info. I've been to your website before but not recently. Infortunately I cann't build where my condo is but I own a cabin up in the mountains in Big Bear Ca where I own the empty lot next door. The cabin is currently rented full time but I've thought of building next door with a garage underneath and a place for TVs upstairs. I have some heavy TVs including 1948 RCA and Philco projection sets; I would have to build-in an elevator or have an upstairs deck with access by a portable rental type lift. Since the mountain place is 60 miles from the condo I couldn't go up there daily but I could rotate a couple sets to be displayed in my house. There is also a longer range problem of what is to become of the TVs 20 years in the future. Currently if I got hit by a car my wife has instructions to donate to a museum or sell. So I'm keeping my eye open for a longer term home here on the west coast. I'll probably fetch 6-8 of the rarer sets from storage in VA and bring them out here and leave the others out there in storage for awhile.

Richard
