Duncan's 1958 Philco Predicta Holiday TV thread

After restoring my 1960 Maganavox, I was looking for a new project.
(thread here)

I picked up my first Predicta TV! I've always been on the search for one of these.

This will be a build thread about repairs done to this model.

I think this is a 1958 Model year, Model G4242M.

Ordered a photofact folder, waiting for that to arrive.

Seems to have an issue with the vertical output circuit, all the capacitors are original. Will be removing the chassis soon to replace those and test the tubes.

High voltage cage is 100% missing. Not sure where I can find another. Also missing adjustment knobs.

I'm not sure what ETF is, do you have a link?

Another " BIG MOMMA MAGGIE" 24AHP4 owner? Don't expect that CRT to last very long! they were very short lived, the one I have is almost dead!

Probably the best vintage TV museum (and website) out there, and about the only dedicated vintage swapmeet out there (ignoring California). One of those places that if you collect and don't know about you're missing out.

Yama already linked you.

Started removing the chassis today. When removing the HV rectifier tube it seems I tore the lead off the flyback transformer.

Based on the diagram, it only has 1 wire, I think I can solder it back on.

Although on further inspection, I found the High voltage cable to the CRT covered in electrical tape. I think I should replace this cable, but will need to source a part.

Send me a PM if you have either a flyback or HV cable!
(sent Moyer electronics an email to see if they have one)

Ah, that's a shame. I think removing and inserting that HV cable is the single most difficult part of restoring Predictas.

It's unlikely (but not impossible) to find a replacement flyback given the demand. I suggest you attempt a repair. Get yourself some Super Corona Dope to paint over the repair and cracked wax coating.

Nothing special about the HV wire. Get some rated for 25kV or better.

Could be someone cut it to make pulling the chassis easier rather than trying to pull it out of the socket.

I've posted a ton of videos about restoring these sets that you may find useful if you haven't already seen them.

Hi to all,
Hi Mr.Duncan,

about rescueing flyback transformers, may i suggest you read the following thread. The tar in the flyback is dissolved by a (several day) bath in paint thinner, then coated with several coats of Marine-grade Spar varnish.
Many photos & step-by-step "how to do it".
The process was pioneered by ACORNVALVE, a much respected & experienced TV restorer. None of his processed flybacks have failed after treatment, even many years later.

Web site is ARF (Antique Radio Forums), TV subsection.

https://antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=444436

This guy builds & sells modern replacement "couplates" for Philco Predictas.
Couplates are passive R & C components assembled in a sort of primitive integrated circuit.

https://tvrestorerguy.com/

Finally, beware of cooked tube sockets, especially power tubes. Predicta cabinets are badly ventilated, internal temperature can be high and the cheap quality bakelite circuit boards can cook and become brittle.

Best Regards
