Cataract Removal Question

I have an RCA CTC-28 that I would like to soon get going. It was our first color set dating to about 1967. It is in good condition except for the CRT which is very tired. I have an NOS Channel Master rebuild for it but it too has the dreaded cataract.

I have never removed a cataract before. I know that Tom (Electronic M) has quite a lot of experience with them. I live in NE Florida so, outdoor sun at this time of the year may help.

Here is the question. Is the "Safety Glass" actually glass or is it plastic? I realise that I need to remove it... C A R E F U L L Y.

I appreciate your responses.

Every bonded safety glass I have encountered is actual glass. The only plexiglass (plastic) safety glass I have encountered is cabinet mounted and is separate from the CRT. You can't hurt the safety glass with heat unless you thermally shock it (change it's temperature rapidly) typically the CRT which is under mechanical stress cracks first under that scenario.
The glue between the safety glass and CRT is PVA as I understand it.

Tom, thanks. That exactly and directly answered my question. I have not attempted to remove the safety glass yet and always thought that they were some kind of polycarbonate.

I have read many threads here and on ARF about the removal of the cataract. I have plenty of those spring loaded clothes pins. Not because I hang out laundry; rather to keep bags of chips closed in the cupboard!
