Newly discovered colour quad videotapes from 1958 and 1959!!!

G'day all. I did a bit of a browse on Video AOL for early colour programming and to my surprise I came across a recently discovered 1959 colour quad videotaping of "Meet Cyd Charisse":
http://www.pbs.org/arts/gallery/from...-cyd-charisse/

This footage is absolutely stunning for quality!!!! It is always exciting to hear of new discoveries of early quad videotapes especially in colour!!!

And it gets better. I have been doing some Googling on this program and accidentally stumbled upon this note written for Quad reproductions at AMIA Meeting by David Crosthwait:
http://mail.quadvideotapegroup.com/p...er/001560.html

They have discovered another colour quad videotape recording from 1958 which is believed to be the third oldest colour videotape recording in existence!!!

I did some further Googling for that particular tape but got no results. So anyone here who is involved with http://quadvideotapegroup.com/ I would love to hear about the details of that 1958 colour videotape if you can publicly divulge the information of it.

You couldn't be more right! An amazing recovery job - her pink dress is a sort of test case, a most sensitive indicator of the slightest chroma problem that might show up.

Thanks for posting this.

I was at the AMIA screening in question--the 1958 tape isn't newly discovered; it was an episode of "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" taped in 1958 for telecast in 1959, which was restored a while back. It looked great.

It's great that the Cyd Charisse tape was found after so many years. Makes me wonder what other early color videotapes are still out there hiding. Probably precious few, but maybe more will eventually surface. I hope that this program will be released on DVD and not kept out of the public's reach like so much other early color video programs. I sure wish they would find the original videotape of the "General Motors 50th Anniversary" from 1958. I have seen the old kinescope, but I know the color tape would be fantastic!
