Tcl qm8k 85”

Replaced a 21 year old Sharp Aquos 65 inch which was ultra reliable and worked fine with this 85 inch TCL. It was time.

Was the Sharp a plasma, LED, or CCFL?

Anything that can make a Sony HD-CRT look miniscule is a monster sized screen.

The Sony CRT can’t handle the sunlight.

Very good sound stage and extended bass from internal TV speakers. Two bass radiators in the rear, forward, side and up firing sound speakers.

Won’t replace a dedicated Dolby Atmos external speaker system.

Update. February 22, 2026

I’ve owned the premium 85 inch 2025 TCL 85QM8K for 21/2 months and had it ISF calibrated. It came at a bargain basement price, initially selling for $3800.00 in anticipation of the 2026 models introduced at CES, January, 2026.

This quantum dot, mini LED backlit, LCD panel has 3700 dimming zones which give very close to OLED blacks with verified by ISF calibration of
4400 nits of brightness, 97% P3 color gamut, 77% Rec. 2020 color gamut. This TCL supports Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision Intelligent, Dolby Atmos, IMAX, Filmaker mode, HLG, HDR10, HDR10+, 144 Hz refresh rate, Wi-Fi 6, Google AI, hands free remote control, backlit remote, ATSC 3.0 tuner and wireless surround speakers which allows flexible room placement. Bezel is only 1/8 inch wide with no black frame insertion between image and bezel.

TCL panels have been used in Sony premium televisions for years and you may have read that TCL will gain 51% control of Sony’s AV products in 2027 if the deal goes through.

First impressions, OLED blacks, very high brightness, excellent color saturation. No visible halos around bright objects or text. The screen coating does a nice job of reducing room reflections, although reflections can be seen in two of the provided screenshots. The Bang & Olufsen augmented Dolby Atmos sound system provide the best sound stage and sound I have heard from any of the on board speakers in many sets owned over many decades. The built in speakers will never replace an external dedicated Dolby Atmos sound system. This TCL has a 7.0 + 2.0 subs, height and side speakers. This TCL falls short with typical LCD off angle viewing, but not an issue in a primary bedroom.

The ISF (Image Science Foundation) technician used a professional CR300 and CR100 high end dual camera system. (Reason for dual cameras requires a long technical description which I won’t go into here) and Calman Pro software. Pre and post calibration charts will be provided soon.

The Milan Olympic viewable screenshots are low resolution, because VK has no auto formatting of images. I strongly suggest viewing the provided 5 links to view the shots in high resolution.

High resolution links.
