I think in early color TV shows and movies the use of color was taken more seriously and more effort was put into maximizing the effect of color to make more of a dramatic difference from b/w...now that color is commonplace, people seem to take it for granted.

Charlie: If it's just that version of the bird (the peacock opening) that you're looking for, you can find it on the Howdy Doody DVD that contains the episode "Clarabell Speaks". It'll have have the wrong sound under it (as the Howdy Doody cast members are singing their own little ditty as it unfurls), but at least you'll have the video portion. -Kevin |

Kevin,
A really nice one was on the front of the PETER PAN broadcast that I saw on NBC in the 1990's. Problem is they cut it right off of the laser disc. Bastardos!

Fred Astaire
All of Fred Astaire's NBC color specials were restored some years back. They aired on the Disney Channel without the peacock opening. I believe the specials were withdrawn from broadcast at the request of Mrs. Astaire and the Astaire estate. The series of shows, as I said were broadcast on NBC starting in 1958. That '58 show was sponsored by Chrysler Corp. They were re-aired in the 60's on CBS. I don't believe they were ever offered on VHS or DVD. The original NBC Peacock opening does show up from time to time on various shows and anniversary specials. I guess catching and recording it is just matter of luck.

When Steve Hoffman mentioned the Peter Pan LD, I dug out my VHS copy which was released in 1990. Like the LD the peacock was clipped. They did manage to tack on a Nestle's Raisinets' commercial ahead of the show. I guess Nestle's Chocolate sponsored the re-airing. The VHS was copyright NBC 1989. Released by GoodTimes Homevideo Platinum Series VHS catalog #7001. One of the AK'ers recommended the DVD "Cole Porter - An All-Star Tribute (Bell Telephone Hour January 28, 1964)". It is a wonderful recording of an early color broadcast with wonderful music. It comes with the 1960's peacock opening and has a bonus track of an early color recording from January 1960.
