CTC-17 clone, instant on sylvania tube may be a problem. clearly missing some tubes but that is not a big deal. If I was getting it I would test the CRT (if its good then its a great CRT sylvanias make a nice pic) and at lest look at the flyback, to make sure its not toast (hopefully its been replaced with a thordarson, if not then some wax dripping is ok, but not burned looking). the Cabinet reminds me of my Sylvania roundie.

It says "instant on" on the front, Is that closer to '70...? CTC17 was instant on..?
Or were some of the "clone" chassis modified at will by the company that sold it...?

Were clone sets built by RCA factory, or some sub-contractor and supplied to
people like Sylvania, or licensed to sylvania and they built it and were free to
have some mods designed for the set as they saw fit for their goals.... Like
this instant on feature....? Was Thordarson transformers better than OEM....?

That big transformer in there makes me think it's a parallel filament set...
I don't remember those being instant on jobs...

Anyway it says Westinghouse on it.... I got one of their clockradios.... TANK!
I think for $30. I would turn it into a daily watcher....

What are they asking for it ??

The set was built by Westinghouse, probably around 1968. It has a Westinghouse part number on the power transformer. The P/T can be wound with a primary to provide partial voltage to the heaters for instant on.
I don't think Sylvania had any part of building it. It just has a Sylvania CRT.
Thordarson flybacks were definately better than OEM. They had a potted silicone winding and were moisture resistant.

Some clones had instant on as far back as at least 1967 (my Airline console for instance). If the CRT is good or comes up to good at 8 volts filament I'd grab it if under 40$ and in your position. If the CRT is bad 15$ for parts/a project that needs a CRT/trading stock is a good investment.

Thanks guys, I had bought a few Thordarson flybacks and they did come with that
silicon covering that was much better looking than the original I was replacing, I
thought it would help out in the high humidity corona and possibly arcing with age...
I did not know they all had it..... And I never did run into many instant on sets either....

I have only had the opportunity to get ONE Westinghouse tube color set--and that was in 1980...all I could get was the chassis

If this set was within 100 miles of me or so I WOULD go for it...even IF the tube was not real good. I could find one to fit it without too much problem.

Good news is its not really a Westinghouse. The last ones I saw
were from abt 68. The real ones looked nothin like this.
Much cheaper made & the HV box looked like a Saturn 5.
They were nothing but problems. Fortunately they were
rare in our area....... IMHO this set is abt 1965.

By 1970 they were out of TV. IIRC they were first with instant on.
I remember a comercial for a 19" B&W that had a black sun screen
& instant on. Must have been 64 or '5. A real pissah looking set BUT
the B&W's were as bad as the colors. Every one had loose
wafer switches in the tuner.

It has been close to 35 years.....BUT...the cabinet of this one looks like the one I stripped in 1980 , I THINK..I KNOW it had dual speakers , which had a "cap" over the magnet--not an open magnet.

More likely a clone of the CTC-25, as the '17 was a very short production run. Be curious how the Westy implemented instant-on with the power xfmr.

The only Westy color sets I ever ran into were series-string with the dunce cap HV cage.
