love the old radios

i love old radios and have collected a few... nothing special 10 dollar philcos. i'm into antiques and frequently see them in antique malls etc, but never know if prices are worth it. is there a good source for determining value and whats a good buy? i want to take a few shelves of my listening room and dedicate to old radios, more a display rather than for listening, any suggestions on models or sources (ebay of course)... thanks ahead for any input

Network, Network, Network! Join an antique radio club and attend antique radio swapmeets. I've found the best bargains are to be had from other collectors who are "thinning" out. As far as what to collect, buy what you like, whether for performance or eye appeal.

There is a series of books called "Collector's Guide to Antique Radios" with lots of pictures & pricing. As with almost any collectible, value isn't written in stone & has lots of variables, but I've found they will give you an approximate worth for things. This book, which I think is up to edition 6 (?) is circulated pretty widely and you might find it in your local bookstore. I've found that after collecting awhile you get a pretty good feel for what something is worth. There are a ton of radios out there in the $20-50 range.

I've got a big old Stewart Warner I'd like to see go to somebody who appreciates it. I've been watching eBay auctions, and it seems like they can't even give them away. I wouldn't even want to think about trying to ship mine somewhere, to me, that would be a nightmare.

S. Tyler- Anudder one is "The Radio Collector's Directory & Price Guide, 1921-1965" by Rob't E. Grinder. It's a paperback book that has 20K listings of vintage broadcast receivers & their market value. Small enuff to toss into the console of yr car when you go on an "expedition". -Sandy G.

The Bunis Guide is also popular. They've done many versions of it so far, and they all show on on eBay.
