How many Zenith Space Screen 45 TVs are still in use?
As the subject line states, I am wondering how many Zenith Space Screen 45 televisions are still in use and, out of those, how many such sets still have operating motor drives. These televisions were marketed by Zenith dealers in the early 1980s and were rear-projection sets, with a complicated motor drive system that raised and lowered the screen by a press of a button on the remote control; they became very problematic after the first year or so, causing the set owners to have the screen fixed in the up (viewing) position and the drive motor unplugged. These sets, being Zenith's TOTL sets at the time, also had on-screen channel readout, Space Phone (which simply displayed the dialed number on the TV screen), and perhaps several other high-end features not found on other Zenith TVs of the period. The feature has not reappeared on any other Zenith TV made after about 1982 or so, more than likely due to the very troublesome nature of the Space Screen 45's screen motor drive.
