Silvertone 9186A diagnosis and repair
After being away from the hobby for decades I acquired a beautiful 1959 Silvertone Medalist with the 24 inch CRT. This unit has super low hours and the story is that the unit hasn't been used since the early 60s. The current situation is this. After replacing a corroded sand resistor at the beginning of the tube string and performing a soft start I have this... can't quite bring the horizontal in before the screen starts bugging out. I'll be running through performing some voltage tests while I wait for an order of capacitors to arrive but I was hoping to get at least something for a baseline, but maybe this is as good as I can get for now.

They did, so far as I can tell. Nothing is overly hot however I don't know that something isn't open or way off value. I plan on re capping the entire set but I always like to see my starting point. As far as being a noob... well I may as well be myself. I haven't been inside a set since 1988 and even then as a teenager I had only a very basic knowledge of testing and diagnostics. The only tool I still have is my old CRT tester

Does it have a selenium horizontal phase detector? Those are always the first suspect for horizontal stability problems, shaking and rolling horizontally.
Looks like a 24ALP4, I have a tired 24AHP4 on my maggot box!

It has a 24AEP4 that tests like new. I'll check on the selenium, I haven't really dug deep yet into the schematic

With it like that I'd recap the horizontal osc and output stages first and address the H AFC selenium pack mentioned, try to get synced picture then do the general recap 2-5 caps at a time if I was a beginner. Once you've recapped several dozen TVs and aren't prone to making mistakes/inexperienced finding them, then shotgunning caps becomes a more viable approach for time saving.
