transformer needed?

Do I really need a matching transformer to hook a 1962 RCA New Haven up to a vcr using a coax. cable?I have using jumper wires to the ant. hook up. the tv is puuting a pic on the screen but the sound hums very quietly and the picture will not hold horiz. sync so far. I still have 5 original caps to replace, just need to pick them up at Fair Radio first
