Question on "SCTV News" Microphone

This has been a question that bothered me, and though it's not necessarily TV-related, it is in the sense that it appeared on-camera in "SCTV News" sketches in the first three seasons at least of Second City TV. A few clips with this microphone (as on the news anchor desk) can be seen on:
