Bill,

At first, I never thought about any harm in storing CRTs in non-climate-controlled areas, but on hindsight, I now feel that cold can do more harm than heat.

Think about it, the glass is quite hot when it is melted to form the tube. Glass and metal don't have the same thermal expansion factor.

Therefore, the colder they get, the further away from their manufacturing point and the metal and glass shrinkage is at its greatest.

Uneven shrinkage speeds up any leak.

Even temperate places like St. Petersburg, Florida can expect at least a 60F temperature shift in a given year, while inland cites have much greater shifts.

Your 16AP4 had a 50 inch long metal-to-glass seal at the bottom of the bell and a 12 inch long seal at the top of the bell, not to mention connections through the socket!
